Halo Campaign Evolved Brings Four-Player Co-op to PS5
Halo: Campaign Evolved launched July 28 on PS5, Xbox and PC with four-player co-op, three new missions and an 81 Metacritic score, day one on Game Pass.
Twenty-Five Years Later, the Ring Shows Up on PlayStation
Halo: Campaign Evolved launched globally on July 28, 2026 — a ground-up Unreal Engine 5 remake of 2001's Halo: Combat Evolved, arriving simultaneously on Xbox Series X|S, PC, Steam, cloud, and PlayStation 5. That last one is the sentence nobody writing about this series in 2001 expected to type. It is the first mainline Halo on a Sony console, and it landed day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
- Launched July 28, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, cloud, and PS5, with day-one Game Pass availability
- Four-player online co-op with crossplay and cross-progression, plus two-player split-screen on console
- Three new bonus missions under Operation: METEORITE, set a year before the original campaign
- 81 on Metacritic and an 83 Top Critic Average on OpenCritic, with 88% of critics recommending it
Why Four-Player Co-op Changes the Original Campaign
Halo: Combat Evolved was built around two players on one couch, and that constraint shaped everything about it — the encounter sizes, the vehicle seats, the pacing of a firefight. Going to four players online is not a checkbox, it is a rebalancing job, and it turns the campaign's set pieces into something structurally different.
The bit I like most is that split-screen survived. Four-player online is the modern expectation; two people on one sofa is the thing that made this game a phenomenon in the first place, and plenty of remakes have quietly dropped it because it is genuinely hard to make work on modern engines. Keeping both is the correct answer and the more expensive one.
What's Actually New Beyond the Coat of Paint?
More than the usual remaster ledger. Operation: METEORITE adds three new missions set a year before the main story, which is prequel context rather than filler. Skull locations have been moved and new Skulls added with fresh modifiers. There's a Campaign Remix mode that randomizes enemies and weapons, an unlockable third-person mode, nine additional weapons pulled from across the series, and — the one that made me laugh — you can now hijack enemy vehicles, including driving a Wraith.
None of that was in the 2001 game. Hijacking arrived two games later, and retrofitting it into the original campaign changes how a lot of encounters play out. Add a remastered soundtrack, rebuilt sound design, and new performances from the principal cast, and this reads as a remake with opinions rather than a resolution bump. Our gaming coverage has watched a strong run of these lately, including the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Switch 2 Edition and its new Merc Assault mode.
Should You Play It on Game Pass or Buy It?
If you have Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass, the decision makes itself — it is there on day one at no additional cost, which is an increasingly reliable pattern for first-party launches and one we noted with Mistfall Hunter's day-one arrival earlier this week.
PlayStation players are the ones with the genuinely new experience, and an 81 Metacritic with 88% of critics recommending is a solid landing for a remake carrying twenty-five years of expectation. Cross-progression across Xbox, PC, Steam and PS5 means a co-op group does not have to negotiate platforms first, which historically has been the single biggest reason co-op plans quietly die in a group chat.
The Bigger Picture
A Halo campaign running on PS5 with crossplay to Xbox is the clearest signal yet of where platform exclusivity is heading. Whatever you think about that shift strategically, the practical effect for players is simple: more people can play together, on whatever hardware they already own, without anyone buying a second console.
For anyone whose first exposure to this series was a friend's living room in 2002 — the ring is back, it looks extraordinary, and this time you can bring three friends.
