What Actually Happens in a Run?
You and up to two friends drop into a hostile zone, hunt relics, fight monsters and rival hunters who want the same relics, and then — the part that separates extraction games from everything else — you have to get out. Everything you found only becomes yours once you reach the extraction point. Die on the way, and someone else is walking home with your afternoon.
That single rule does something remarkable to the pacing. The first half of a run is a loot game; the second half is a nerve game. The moment you find something genuinely good is the exact moment your risk calculus flips from "one more room" to "get to the door." Not every game gets to have a mechanic that reliably manufactures tension without a single scripted set piece.
Is the Setting More Than Dark Fantasy Wallpaper?
Pleasantly, yes. The premise is that the gods and the outer gods fought, every deity fell, and their blood became the Gyldenmist — a corrosive, corrupting force spreading across the world. Survivors huddle in refuges until a girl named Dew appears with the power to resurrect fallen heroes into immortal bodies. That is a tidy piece of design writing, because it does the thing good extraction fiction needs to do: it explains, in-world, why you keep coming back after dying. You are not respawning. You are being brought back, again, by someone with a reason.
The six classes lean into distinct fantasy archetypes rather than reskinned weapon loadouts — Sorcerer, Mercenary, Seer, and Withered Knight among them — which matters more in a three-player squad game than it does solo. Extraction runs live or die on whether your trio covers different problems.
The Beta Number Is the Real Headline
Nearly 430,000 players during the Steam Next Fest open beta between June 14 and June 22 is a serious figure for a $24.99 game from a studio without a household name. Beta turnout does not guarantee retention — extraction games in particular tend to have a brutal second-week curve — but it does mean the launch will not be lonely, which is close to a prerequisite for a PvPvE game. Empty lobbies kill this genre faster than bad balance.
Why the Game Pass Deal Changes the Math
Extraction shooters need population density more than almost any other genre. Matchmaking depends on it, the economy depends on it, and the moment-to-moment tension of possibly running into another squad depends on it. Putting the game on Game Pass day one is the single most effective thing a mid-priced extraction game can do to guarantee a healthy first month — the same play that has been working well for day-one arrivals across the service this summer.
At twenty-five dollars, or free if you already subscribe, this is an easy afternoon to spend. Our gaming coverage will check back in once the seasonal structure and post-launch cadence come into focus.
