Crimson Desert Free Trial: Play 5 Hours Free on Xbox and PS5
Crimson Desert's 5-hour free trial runs through January 6 on Xbox and PS5, and your save carries over. Plus what the Charting the Unknown DLC adds.
Pywel just rolled out the welcome mat. Pearl Abyss is letting anyone on Xbox, and PlayStation Plus Premium and Deluxe members on PS5, play the first five hours of Crimson Desert Enhanced for free, and your progress carries straight into the full game if you buy it. The trial launched on October 29, 2026 alongside the first big expansion, Charting the Unknown, according to Xbox Wire and Eurogamer.
- Trial length: the first 5 hours of the Crimson Desert Enhanced base game
- Dates: October 29, 2026 through January 6, 2027
- Who can play: every Xbox player, no subscription required, plus PS Plus Premium and Deluxe members on PS5, per Eurogamer
- Save transfer: trial progress carries over to the full game, though the 5-hour timer cannot be reset
How Does the Crimson Desert Free Trial Work?
Think of it as a very generous demo with a stopwatch. You boot up the Enhanced edition of the base game, explore for five hours, and that is it: the timer is final, so you cannot start a fresh save to squeeze in extra time. The good news is that nothing you do is wasted, because your character, gear and story progress move over if you decide to buy. The expansion content is not part of the trial, which, honestly, is fine. Five hours in an open world this size barely gets you out of the opening act.
Crimson Desert Enhanced itself arrived with Patch 2.00 in August, rolling new cutscenes, extra story moments and expanded voice-over and language support into every post-launch update so far.
What Does Charting the Unknown Add?
If you are already a Greymane, the Charting the Unknown DLC is the main event. Pearl Abyss lists a lot of new stuff:
- Three new storylines: one each for Kliff, Oongka and Damiane
- Ocean exploration: dive underwater to find ruins, treasure and new creatures, or build your own ship and sail the Great Ocean of Pywel
- Relationships: deepen bonds with residents, leading to romance and even marriage
- Housing and strongholds: build a home from the ground up, decorate liberated castles, and lease facilities like a restaurant or smithy to run yourself
- Garden of Trials: a boss-rush challenge that lines up the bosses you have faced, one after another
Push Square points to a fan-made map comparison showing that, with the expansion installed, the original world takes up roughly a quarter of the total map, most of the new space being ocean dotted with islands. The new storylines are post-game quests, so you will need to finish the base campaign first. That is big sailing-adventure energy, and I am here for it.
Why This Is a Great Time to Jump In
Crimson Desert has been one of 2026's biggest releases, selling more than 6 million copies in its first three months, according to Eurogamer. That is a long way from the 3 million copies it sold in its first five days back in March. Eurogamer also reports that a Switch 2 version is in development and that Pearl Abyss has hinted at multiplayer-focused content down the road.
A free, save-compatible trial is the ideal way to see whether Pywel's combat and exploration click for you before the holiday rush. Grab a snack, block out an evening, and see how far you get. For more launches and updates, check out our gaming news.
