Dune Awakening Blood and Ice: What the Free Expansion Adds
Dune: Awakening's free Blood and Ice expansion lands December 1 with the frozen Polar Sink map and about 35 hours of new progression on PC, PS5 and Xbox.
Arrakis just got a lot colder, and honestly, that is the plot twist I did not know I needed. Funcom announced on October 29, 2026 that Dune: Awakening's Blood and Ice expansion launches December 1 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox, and it is completely free. The headline addition is the Polar Sink, a brand-new map in the planet's frozen north where the survival rules flip: instead of fleeing the heat, you are hunting for it.
- Release date: December 1, 2026, free for all players on PC, PS5 and Xbox
- New map: the Polar Sink, with two biomes, the tundra and the ice cap
- Content: around 35 hours of new progression, plus new vehicle modules, augments and specialization traits
- Also coming: an offline single-player mode in November and full cross-play in January 2027
What Is the Polar Sink in Dune: Awakening?
Funcom describes the Polar Sink as two zones layered by difficulty. You start in the tundra, where wealthy water shipper families defend lavish strongholds, then push toward the heavily guarded ice cap. Your desert-tuned gear will not cut it here, so you will need resources found only in the north to craft cold-weather equipment.
The clever bit is how the new map loops back into the old one. Ice you harvest up north can cool your base equipment in the desert and speed up production. Think of it as the survival-game version of a water bending side quest: a whole new biome that feeds your existing base instead of replacing it. Funcom says future updates will add more reasons to revisit the region.
How Long Is the Blood and Ice Expansion?
Funcom puts it at around 35 hours of progression, which is a seriously chunky amount for a free expansion. PC Gamer notes the studio is pitching it as a return to ground-level survival for veteran players, with traversal, temperature management and combat all mattering again. If you have been flying everywhere in an ornithopter, prepare to walk in the snow like a regular Fremen-adjacent mortal.
What Else Is Coming to Dune: Awakening?
The expansion is part of a bigger three-to-four-month roadmap. Funcom says more than one million new players have joined since the game's console launch, which we covered alongside its single-player mode debut. Next up:
- Offline single-player in November, so you can play solo without an internet connection
- The Water Crisis event shortly after Blood and Ice, following the current Scourge event
- Character transfers and full cross-play in January 2027
- A cosmetics store with outfits, vehicle variants and base customization, which Funcom says will help fund continued free updates
Funcom also says it will keep expanding the game through 2027. For a survival MMO that has already reinvented itself once this year, adding a free 35-hour frozen frontier is a confident way to close out 2026. More big updates live in our gaming news.
