Alrest Has Never Looked Like This

The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 went live digitally on July 30, 2026, and it is doing more than pushing pixels. Yes, there is 4K at 60 fps docked and 1080p at 60 fps handheld. There is also a brand-new battle mode, a new rare Blade pulled from Xenosaga, and an exclusive quest to go with her. For a nine-year-old JRPG, that is a generous package.

  • Digital release July 30, 2026; a physical edition follows on October 1, 2026
  • 4K at 60 fps docked, 1080p at 60 fps handheld, with in-game cutscenes re-rendered at higher resolution and frame rate
  • Merc Assault, a new mode letting you directly command Blades sent out on mercenary missions, plus rare Blade Momo and an exclusive quest
  • $69.99 standalone or a $9.99 upgrade for existing owners; amiibo support and new Pyra and Mythra cosmetics included

Why Merc Assault Is the Smart Addition

Here is the thing about Xenoblade 2's mercenary system: it was always a menu. You picked Blades, sent them off, and they came back later with loot and a level. Perfectly functional, completely inert — the JRPG equivalent of a mobile game's idle timer bolted onto a 100-hour epic.

Merc Assault takes that menu and gives it a battlefield. You now directly command the Blades you dispatched, up to six fighters per the reveal trailer, in actual action battles. That converts dead time into playable content and — more importantly — gives a reason to care about Blades who were previously just stat lines you shuffled into a queue. It is the kind of addition that comes from someone looking hard at where players disengage.

Is Momo a Big Deal?

If you know, you know. Momo is a Xenosaga character, and Xenosaga is the earlier Monolith Soft lineage that a meaningful chunk of the Xenoblade audience arrived through. Dropping her in as a rare Blade with her own quest is a wave at exactly that crowd, and it costs nothing for newcomers who will simply meet a new character.

The rest of the cosmetic package — new outfits for Pyra and Mythra, additional gear — is standard remaster fare. The amiibo support is a nice nod to hardware plenty of people still have in a drawer.

What Does the Upgrade Actually Cost?

$9.99 if you already own Xenoblade Chronicles 2, or $69.99 standalone. That upgrade price is the number that matters, because it is aimed at the large population who bought the game on the original Switch and never finished it. Ten dollars for 4K60 plus a new mode is a fair ask for a re-run, and Xenoblade 2 is a game where the framerate improvement genuinely changes the experience — the original's combat was busy in a way the hardware struggled to keep pace with.

This is the third of four planned Xenoblade remasters for Switch 2, with Xenoblade Chronicles 3 arriving December 3, 2026. Nintendo is working through the catalogue methodically, and our gaming coverage has watched the Switch 2 build out its library steadily this summer alongside releases like Splatoon Raiders.

Worth Starting Now?

If you bounced off Xenoblade 2 originally, this is a reasonable moment to try again. The game asks a lot in its first ten hours — the Blade gacha, the tutorial density, the sheer volume of systems — and a smoother frame rate does not fix that. What it does fix is the specific friction of reading a busy combat screen, and that friction was doing real damage to the early hours.

The physical edition on October 1 is the one to wait for if you collect. Everyone else can start climbing the Titans this weekend.
