Happy Pikmin Day, explorers! Nintendo made November 1 official during a surprise Pikmin Day Direct on October 31, 2026, and it came with a gift: a free demo for Pikmin 4 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, landing on the eShop on November 2, ahead of the full game's November 12 launch. Grab your whistle, because Oatchi has learned some new tricks.

  • Launch date: November 12, 2026, bundled with the new Dandori Academy mode.
  • Demo: arrives November 2, and progress carries over to the full game.
  • Dandori Academy: 72 timed exam stages released over time, with medals and leaderboards.
  • Upgrade path: owners of the original Switch version can buy an upgrade pack on the eShop.

What's New in Pikmin 4 Switch 2 Edition?

The headline addition is Dandori Academy. "Dandori" is the series' word for planning your moves efficiently, and the Academy turns that into a skill-check gauntlet. Nintendo says 72 exam stages will roll out over time across a range of difficulties, so you can pick what suits your squad-wrangling skills and earn in-game medals. Eurogamer reports the Direct showed one exam, Gargantuan Garden, where you race to collect gold nuggets before the timer hits zero. It is basically a speedrun dojo, and I am already preparing my excuses.

Then there is Oatchi, the best space pup in the galaxy. On Switch 2, he responds to voice commands through the console's microphone. Nintendo's own description encourages you to tell him how good he is, and frankly that should be a feature in every game. The Switch 2 Edition also brings sharper high-resolution visuals in both TV and handheld modes.

Can You Play the Pikmin 4 Demo Before Launch?

Yes. The demo hits the Nintendo eShop on November 2, and Eurogamer confirms any progress you make transfers to the full game when you buy it. That makes it a low-risk way to see whether the Switch 2 upgrade is for you, or to introduce a friend to the series before release day.

Does Pikmin 4 Support Multiplayer on Switch 2?

It does. Dandori Battles let you face off against a friend on the same system, and Nintendo says you can also bring friends in with GameShare locally or online through GameChat, even if they don't own the game. Couch rivalry over who grabbed the most treasure is a Pikmin tradition, and GameShare makes that rivalry much easier to start.

Why Pikmin Day Is a Big Deal for Fans

Nintendo warned before the broadcast that it would not announce a new game, so the focus stayed on celebrating the series. Shigeru Miyamoto introduced actor Fuka Koshiba as the series' new ambassador. Pikmin 4 first launched on Switch in July 2023 and became a fan favorite thanks to its approachable design, and the Switch 2 Edition gives returning captains a reason to dive back in. It also lines up nicely with other upgraded Switch 2 releases we have covered, like the Cult of the Lamb free Switch 2 upgrade.

November is shaping up to be busy for Nintendo fans, with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake arriving on November 5 as well. Keep up with every launch in our gaming news coverage.
