Factorio 2.1 Stable: What's New for Space Age Players?
Factorio 2.1 is now stable, two years after Space Age, adding mixed rockets, platform-to-platform transfers, Quality-free play and native ARM64 Linux.
Engineers, it is time to rebuild the factory. Wube Software has marked Factorio 2.1 as stable, and the timing is perfect: the October 23, 2026 Friday Facts post landed exactly two years after the Space Age expansion launched. After a long summer on the experimental branch, the update is now ready for everyone who stuck with 2.0, and it is packed with the kind of quality-of-life upgrades that make the factory grow faster and smoother.
- Release: Factorio 2.1 marked stable on October 23, 2026, two years to the week after Space Age
- Space logistics: mixed rocket cargo, "Import from Any" requests and platform-to-platform transfers
- Quality: Space Age can now be played without the Quality mod, and Quality locomotives and wagons arrive
- Platforms: Factorio now runs natively on ARM64 Linux, including Raspberry Pi headless servers
What's New in Factorio 2.1?
Wube is clear that 2.1 is not about new planets, enemies or research trees. Instead, it is a big collection of polish and the features the team wanted for 2.0 but did not have time to finish. And honestly? That is the best kind of update. It is like a director's cut where every scene is just a little tighter.
Space platforms get the biggest glow-up. Rockets can now carry multiple different items in a single launch, so no more firing off a full stack of everything just to build a small outpost. Leave the "Import from" slot blank and a platform will pull fuel, ammo or repair packs from anywhere. Platforms can also trade items with each other in orbit, the hub's requests can be driven by the circuit network, and a new Radar Universe mode lets circuit signals travel between planets and platforms.
How Does the Factorio 2.1 Update Change Combat and Circuits?
Platform balance got a sensible rethink. Asteroid damage now depends on an asteroid's remaining health rather than its speed, the platform hub has more health and resistances, and drag is now based on mass instead of width. Translation: the infamous "pencil ship" is no longer the only way to go fast.
Circuit fans get a lot to play with. Reads and writes can be split across different wire colors, replacing the old self-subtraction trick. Labs can switch research based on circuit conditions, boilers and heat exchangers can be wired up for backup power, pipes connect to the network with a new GUI, and land mines can double as tripwires and enemy detectors. There is also a landing pad unloading bay, so inserters can move goods straight from the pad onto trains and belts.
Can You Play Space Age Without Quality?
Yes. The Recycler has been split into its own mod, and Quality is now a "Recommended" dependency that is enabled by default but can be switched off. For Quality lovers, there are faster Quality locomotives and bigger cargo and fluid wagons, though the so-called "space casino" is closed because Quality modules no longer work in asteroid reprocessing.
Other long-requested fixes are in too. Pumpjacks and burner miners can be flipped, fluid mixing prevention is back, and fluid flow scales properly for high-throughput Legendary machines. Biter expansions now scale with evolution, and the graphics get a final big pass with new assemblers, an oil refinery, rocket silo, heat exchanger and a diagonal flamethrower turret.
Factorio on ARM64 Linux and Raspberry Pi
Here is a fun crossover for our hardware readers: Factorio now runs natively on ARM64 Linux. Wube lists Raspberry Pi headless servers, Asahi Linux on Apple Silicon MacBooks and spare cloud VPS instances among the supported hardware. If you have been thinking about a Raspberry Pi home server, a dedicated multiplayer factory just became a great weekend project.
One tip before you hit update: 2.0 saves will load, but changes such as the circuit input and output split may break existing designs, and saves and blueprints cannot be downgraded afterward. Back up anything you care about first. PC Gamer describes 2.1 as the game's final major update, though Wube's own post does not use that phrase.
