Valheim Finally Hits 1.0

Pour one out for your Early Access save files, Vikings, because Valheim is officially finished. Iron Gate's co-op survival phenomenon launched version 1.0 on September 9, about five and a half years after its February 2021 Early Access debut, and it arrives with its final biome, a pile of new gear, and two brand-new console homes.

  • Launch: September 9, 2026, with the Deep North biome as the final major region
  • New platforms: PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 join PC, Mac and Xbox, with crossplay across every version
  • Price: $29.99 for new buyers (regional prices may vary), and a free update for existing owners
  • New content: 40+ weapons, 10+ creatures, 4 armor sets and 80+ new building pieces

What's Actually in the Deep North?

The Deep North is the icy finale Valheim fans have been theorizing about since the Ashlands, and Iron Gate went big. Notebookcheck describes it as over two biomes' worth of content: snow-buried forests, frozen coastlines and abandoned village ruins.

The wildlife alone is a vibe. There are seals along the coast, and moose you can tame and ride, which is the Viking upgrade nobody knew they needed. The headline threat is the Gammeltroll, an ancient troll that turns to stone when it dies. Harvest the Petrified Tissue from its remains and you can smelt it into Bloodgold, the new ore that feeds the Nord tier of weapons, crafted with molds you'll find in dungeons.

Speaking of dungeons, there are two new types. The Winding Tunnels run underground beneath the village ruins, while the Gates of Mörkhalla are a fortress-style challenge that requires an Intricate Key. Back home, the new Frost Foundry crafting station, Scalewood building pieces, an ice maker tool and the Hooded Lantern round out the kit.

The official patch notes list 30+ new materials, 20+ foods, 2 capes and 2 trinkets on top of all that. There's new music too, because of course a Viking finale needs a soundtrack.

Do Existing Valheim Players Need to Buy It Again?

Nope. If you bought into Early Access, your copy simply updates to 1.0. Existing saves still load, though Iron Gate recommends starting a fresh world for the best experience of the full progression. Honestly, a new world with friends and a moose is the correct move.

For crossplay squads, the good news is that every platform can play together, still with room for 1 to 10 players per world. The catch is that save files do not sync across platforms, except that Xbox players can pick up their saves on PC through the Microsoft Store. Modders should also note that 1.0 has no official mod support or Steam Workshop, and Iron Gate can't guarantee existing mods will work.

More Than a Content Drop

Version 1.0 is also a technical refresh. Iron Gate upgraded the Unity engine, added achievements, upgradeable pockets and a draw-distance setting, rebalanced enemy spawns in the Ashlands, overhauled the hammer and serving tray menus, and unlocked every hair and beard style from the start. Downloads are modest at roughly 4.3GiB on most platforms.

It's a genuinely great moment for survival games, a genre that keeps producing breakouts like Windrose's 1.5-million-copy pirate hit. Valheim helped start that wave in 2021, and now it gets the ending it deserves. Grab your mead horn, and keep up with more launches in our gaming coverage.
