A Nearly Three-Year-Old Game Just Got a Free Glow-Up

Here is a thing that does not happen often enough: a game that shipped in 2023 quietly receiving a substantial free update in 2026. On July 28, 2026, Insomniac pushed Marvel's Spider-Man 2 to version 1.005.000 on PS5 (2.727.0.0 on PC), and the patch brings native PSSR 2.0 support to PS5 Pro, two free suits, and a new Power Saver mode across every PS5 console.

  • Update 1.005.000 on PS5 and 2.727.0.0 on PC, live July 28, 2026
  • Native PSSR 2.0 support on PS5 Pro, improving both image quality and performance
  • Two free suits: the Fresh Start suit from Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and a suit from MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls
  • A new Power Saver mode is available on all PlayStation 5 consoles

What Is PSSR 2.0 and Why Does It Matter?

PSSR is PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution — Sony's machine-learning upscaler, the PS5 Pro's answer to DLSS. It renders the game at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution image, buying back performance headroom that can go into frame rate, ray tracing, or both.

The 2.0 revision is a meaningful upgrade to the reconstruction model, and Insomniac implementing it natively — rather than relying on a generic pass — is why the improvement is showing up on both sides of the ledger. Sony and Insomniac say image quality *and* performance improve, and early player reports line up: a cleaner picture with noticeably less of the smearing that upscalers tend to produce in fast motion.

Which, for a game built around swinging through Manhattan at speed, is precisely the failure mode you would want fixed. Insomniac has been an early adopter here before — Housemarque's Saros locked in PSSR 2 features ahead of its launch earlier this year, and the first-party studios have effectively been the proving ground for the technology.

The Two Free Suits

Suit drops are the currency of Spider-Man games, and this pair is nicely chosen. The Fresh Start suit comes from Spider-Man: Brand New Day, tying the game to the current film slate. The second is pulled from MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, the fighting game — a fun bit of cross-pollination between two very different corners of the Marvel gaming lineup.

Both are free. No pass, no bundle, no storefront detour. Load the game, claim them, get back to swinging.

What Does Power Saver Mode Do?

This is the sleeper addition. Power Saver mode is available across all PS5 consoles, not just the Pro, and it reduces the console's power draw during play. For anyone who has noticed what a modern console does to a summer room temperature — or to an electricity bill — having the option built into a first-party game is a small but genuinely welcome piece of consideration.

Why This Is a Good Sign

Games get abandoned. The economics rarely reward going back to a three-year-old title to implement a new upscaling model, and Insomniac has done it anyway, bundling in free cosmetics and an efficiency mode on top. It also suggests the studio's toolchain is in healthy shape ahead of Marvel's Wolverine, PlayStation's headline first-party release for the year.

If Spider-Man 2 has been sitting in your library since launch, this is a reasonable excuse to reinstall it — especially on a PS5 Pro, where the visual difference is the most pronounced. The update is live now. More in our gaming coverage.
