LILYGO T-Display C5 Adds Wi-Fi 6 and Battery for $12

A Portable Wi-Fi 6 Board With a Screen and a Battery Connector

The ESP32-C5 has spent 2026 turning dual-band Wi-Fi 6 into a commodity feature for maker boards. LILYGO's T-Display C5, detailed on July 28, 2026, is the variant aimed at portable, screen-first projects: a 1.9-inch colour IPS display, onboard battery management, and two Qwiic connectors, from $11.83.

What Makes This ESP32-C5 Board Different?

Two things: the power path and the expansion connectors. The AXP6202 power management IC handles lithium battery charging and switching through a 2-pin JST connector, which means a project can run untethered without adding a separate charging module. Combined with a 62 × 26 mm footprint and a 10 mm profile, the result is close to a wearable-scale device out of the box.

The two Qwiic connectors — one I2C, one UART — are the other differentiator. Qwiic is the polarized 4-pin standard that lets you chain sensors without soldering, and having both bus types broken out means an environmental sensor and a GPS module can both plug in with no breadboard involved. For prototyping, that is a meaningful reduction in friction.

Is Wi-Fi 6 Worth It on a Microcontroller?

For a single sensor reporting once a minute, no. The value shows up in dense deployments. Dual-band means you can move devices onto 5GHz and off the crowded 2.4GHz band entirely, and 802.11ax adds Target Wake Time — a scheduling mechanism that lets a device negotiate exactly when it must be awake to talk to the access point. On a battery-powered node, that is a direct battery-life improvement rather than a throughput one.

The chip also carries an 802.15.4 radio for Zigbee and Thread alongside Bluetooth 5.0 LE, which makes it a plausible bridge device for Matter-based smart home setups — one board speaking to both the Wi-Fi network and the Thread mesh.

The Display and I/O

The 1.9-inch IPS panel runs 172 × 320 in RGB565 through an ST7735 controller — enough resolution for a readable dashboard, a status readout, or a simple menu interface. A capacitive touch variant exists but is not currently on sale.

Beyond the screen, two 12-pin headers expose 14 GPIO along with UART, ADC inputs and power rails. Memory is 384KB of onboard SRAM plus 8MB of PSRAM and 16MB of flash, and 320KB of ROM. The PSRAM allocation is the notable figure: 8MB is comfortable room for framebuffers, which is exactly what a display-oriented board needs.

Power comes in at 5V/500mA over USB-C, with the AXP6202 managing the battery path.

Where It Fits

This is the fifth distinct ESP32-C5 board we have covered this year, and the family is starting to specialize sensibly. The M5Stack Stamp-C5 is the $6.50 minimal module for embedding; the ESP32-C5 devkits are the general-purpose development option; the T-Display C5 is the one to reach for when the project has a screen, needs a battery, and should fit in a pocket.

Pricing sits at $11.83 from the LILYGO store (currently out of stock), $11.76 on Tindie and $14.99 on Amazon. LILYGO has a track record of packing unusual combinations onto small boards — its T-Display-P4 with GPS, LoRaWAN and Ethernet was a good example — and this one continues the pattern at a lower price point.
