Half-Life: Alyx Foveated Rendering: How to Turn It On

Valve's October 26 Half-Life: Alyx patch adds foveated rendering for PC VR on GTX 16-series and RTX 20-series cards or newer. Here's how to enable it.

Half-Life: Alyx is still getting love six years after launch. Valve's October 26, 2026 update brings foveated rendering to the PC version of its landmark VR shooter, a feature that first arrived with the game's standalone port to the Steam Frame. If you own an eye-tracking headset and want smoother frame rates in City 17, this patch is a free performance boost worth switching on tonight.

  • What's new: a Foveated Rendering toggle under Advanced Performance in the PC version's settings
  • GPU support: on DirectX, Nvidia GTX 16-series or RTX 20-series and newer; AMD cards need the -vulkan launch option
  • Best results: Valve recommends enabling eye tracking on your headset
  • Also fixed: better reprojection on Steam Frame, several workshop rendering crashes and the "Gnome Alone" achievement

What Is Foveated Rendering in Half-Life: Alyx?

Foveated rendering takes its name from the fovea, the small central part of your eye that sees the sharpest detail. The technique renders the center of the image at full quality and the periphery at lower quality, lowering the load on your graphics card. Pair it with eye tracking and the high-detail zone follows wherever you look, so in theory you never notice the trade. Valve's patch notes say simply that it "can increase rendering performance."

PC Gamer, which tried it, says the effect is more noticeable than Valve's wireless foveated streaming on Steam Frame, since you can sometimes catch the boundary between quality zones as your eyes move. It still called the result pretty good, especially for anyone chasing headroom on a demanding headset.

How Do You Turn On Foveated Rendering?

The setup takes about a minute:

  • Update the game on Steam to the October 26, 2026 build
  • Open Settings, then Advanced Performance, and enable Foveated Rendering
  • On AMD graphics, add -vulkan to the game's launch options in Steam first
  • Turn on eye tracking in your headset's software for the best image quality

Which VR Headsets Work With It?

Valve notes the feature technically runs on any headset, but it shines with eye tracking. PC Gamer lists these headsets from Valve's documentation, a few of which need third-party drivers:

  • Steam Frame and Meta Quest Pro
  • Bigscreen Beyond 2e and Apple Vision Pro
  • PlayStation VR2
  • Pimax Dream Air and the Pimax Crystal series
  • Varjo Aero

Valve adds that there are "probably more" it doesn't know about, so it is worth experimenting with whatever hardware you have.

A Second Life for a VR Classic

PC Gamer notes Alyx had no major updates between 2022 and the Steam Frame port, and Valve's patch notes for that port describe moving the game to ARM64 and updating most of the engine for standalone play. Now desktop players are getting the dividends too. It is the kind of long-tail support that keeps a classic feeling fresh, and it makes Alyx an even better showcase for the new wave of eye-tracking headsets, including the Steam Frame, which bundles the game.

The patch also enables stencil buffer tagging when running natively on Steam Frame for cleaner reprojection, and fixes crashes that showed up in community workshop content. For more patches, releases and hardware news, visit our gaming hub.
