GTA 6 Pre-Load Guide: 212GB, Start Times and What to Prep

Clear your hard drives and make peace with your backlog. Rockstar Games has detailed GTA 6 pre-load plans, and the headline number is big: up to 212GB. Pre-loading begins on November 10, nine days ahead of the November 19 launch of Grand Theft Auto VI on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. If you were hoping to delete just one game to make room, I have bad news for your Call of Duty install.

  • File size: up to 212GB depending on the device, per Rockstar; Sony advises clearing at least 212GB on PS5.
  • PS5 pre-load: November 10 at midnight local time, for those who have pre-ordered.
  • Xbox pre-load: November 10 at 12am GMT, which is 4pm PT / 7pm ET on November 9.
  • Launch day: November 19, with code-in-box copies at retailers from November 12.

What Time Does the GTA 6 Pre-Load Start?

It depends on your platform, so check this carefully before you tell your friends you will be first in. On PS5, the pre-download rolls out by local time zone, starting at midnight on November 10. VGC points out that players in New Zealand get to go first, which feels like a rare and well-earned victory for them.

Xbox Series X and S takes a single global approach instead: 12am GMT on November 10. In North America that lands on the afternoon or evening of November 9, so Xbox players in the US get an earlier calendar date than their PS5 friends. Expect some smug group chat messages.

How Much Storage Does GTA 6 Need?

Sony's guidance on the PlayStation Blog is simple: clear a minimum of 212GB on your PS5. Rockstar's wording is "up to 212GB" depending on the device, so the Xbox figures could differ a little. Either way, this is a large install, and leaving your cleanup until pre-load night is a side quest you do not want.

A few simple steps from Sony's checklist and some basic housekeeping will help:

  • Check your account: make sure your console sign-in and account details are up to date.
  • Pre-order first: on PS5, pre-download timing applies to players who have pre-ordered.
  • Free up space early: archive games you have finished, and remember big titles can be redownloaded later.
  • Budget for your connection: on slower broadband, a download this size can take many hours, so use the nine-day buffer.

Do you own a physical copy? Check its contents and plan your download, since Rockstar's code-in-box version arrives at retailers from November 12 and relies on a digital download rather than a disc full of game data.

What Are the GTA 6 Launch Day Extras?

There is also a charming bit of old-school fan service. On launch day, Rockstar will add a printable cover art poster and map of Leonida to its website as a free digital download. A double-sided physical version will follow shortly after launch from the Rockstar Store, at $0.99 on its own or free with any purchase there. Big-box game maps were the original fast travel, and I am delighted they are back.

Should You Bother Pre-Loading GTA 6?

If you plan to play at launch, yes. The point of pre-loading is simple: the game is ready as soon as it unlocks, rather than leaving you stuck behind a progress bar while everyone else is already causing chaos in Vice City. With a file this size, starting early is the difference between playing on launch night and playing the following day.
