God of War Laufey Gets a February 16, 2027 PS5 Date
Sony Santa Monica dated God of War Laufey for February 16, 2027 on PS5 at San Diego Comic-Con, and confirmed the next game brings Kratos back.
Faye Gets Her Date, and Kratos Gets His Ticket Back
Okay, gamers — clear your February 2027. At San Diego Comic-Con on July 25, 2026, Sony Santa Monica creative lead Cory Barlog walked onto a panel stage and dropped the thing everyone in that room had been waiting for since June: God of War Laufey arrives February 16, 2027 on PlayStation 5. Physical disc and digital, both.
And then, because one announcement was apparently not enough, he confirmed that the *next* God of War connects directly to Laufey's story — and stars Kratos.
- God of War Laufey launches February 16, 2027, PS5 exclusive, on disc and digital
- Announced by Cory Barlog at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25, 2026
- You play as Faye — Laufey the Just, Kratos' late wife — after she wakes in the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods
- A Kratos-led sequel was confirmed at the same panel, tying directly into Laufey's story
What Is the Everywhen, Exactly?
This is the part that has the lore community absolutely feral, and rightly so. The setup: Faye dies — we knew that going in, it's the entire emotional foundation of the 2018 game — and then wakes up somewhere she was not expecting. The Everywhen is described as the afterlife of the gods, and it is not a peaceful retirement village. Her carefully laid plans to protect Kratos and Atreus are coming apart, and she has to move through a genuinely hostile realm to hold them together.
So it is a prequel emotionally and a sequel structurally, which is a properly clever bit of narrative engineering. You already know how her story ends. The tension is entirely about what she managed to set in motion before it did.
Barlog framed it this way at the panel: "I wanted to show an extension of this world where the characters you'll encounter are unexpected. Laufey is a continuation of what came before and to prepare and expand what comes next."
That last clause is doing heavy lifting. "Prepare and expand what comes next" is a man telling you the Kratos game is already load-bearing on this one.
Why Does the February Date Actually Matter?
Because when we covered the June State of Play reveal, there was no date at all — just a gorgeous trailer and a collective "please, Sony, when." Two months from tease to a locked calendar date, delivered at a Comic-Con panel rather than held for another showcase, reads as a studio that is confident about where the build is.
February is also a smart slot. It sits clear of the autumn crush, it gives the game room to be *the* thing people are playing rather than one of nine, and it lands in a month that has quietly become prime real estate for big single-player releases. Sony putting its flagship there is a vote of confidence.
The Sequel Tease Is the Real Headline
Look, I love a release date. But "the next God of War stars Kratos and connects directly to this one" is the sentence that changes how you play Laufey. Every choice, every character, every unexplained thread in the Everywhen is now potentially setup. Barlog gave almost no further detail — no window, no platform confirmation, nothing — which is exactly how you keep a panel room buzzing for a year.
It also quietly answers the anxious question some fans have had since Ragnarök: whether the Norse saga's conclusion meant Kratos was done as a playable character. Apparently not.
What to Watch Next
Between now and February we should get a proper gameplay deep-dive, details on how Faye's combat differs from Kratos' axe-and-blades loop, and hopefully a look at how big the Everywhen actually is. Preorders and edition details are the near-term watch item. Until then, our gaming coverage will keep tracking the road to February — and if you want something to play in the meantime, Splatoon Raiders is doing excellent work on the other side of the console aisle.
