Espressif ESP32-C61-MINI Puts Wi-Fi 6 in a $2 Module

Espressif's ESP32-C61-MINI-1 brings 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth LE 5.3 to a RISC-V module costing about $2 each in five-packs, with a $9 dev board.

Wi-Fi 6 Is Now a Two-Dollar Feature

Espressif's ESP32-C61-MINI-1 and MINI-1U modules have appeared on AliExpress at $10.70 for a pack of five — roughly $2 per module — bringing 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth LE 5.3 into the price bracket previously occupied by Wi-Fi 4 parts. CNX Software covered the listings on August 4, 2026.

What Does Wi-Fi 6 Give a Microcontroller?

Not speed. A sensor node reporting a temperature every thirty seconds does not care about 150Mbps, and 20MHz-only operation caps the headline throughput well below what a phone or laptop negotiates.

What it gives you is behaviour in crowded networks. The 802.11ax features that matter at this end of the market are Target Wake Time and OFDMA. Target Wake Time lets the access point and the device agree in advance on when the device will wake to transmit, which means the radio can stay asleep with confidence rather than periodically listening — a direct win for battery life. OFDMA lets the access point service many small clients within a single transmission opportunity instead of giving each one an exclusive slot.

Both of those are designed for exactly the situation a modern home or factory floor produces: dozens or hundreds of devices, each sending very little, all contending for airtime. Wi-Fi 4 handles ten such devices happily and two hundred badly.

Two Variants and a Cheap Board

The MINI-1 carries an onboard PCB antenna in a 13.2 x 16.6 x 2.4mm package. The MINI-1U swaps that for an external antenna connector and shrinks to 3.2 x 12.5 x 2.4mm, which is the variant to reach for when the module has to sit inside a metal enclosure.

Software support is ESP-IDF v6.0, with Arduino requiring a special compilation step and CircuitPython available in an alpha state. That is the usual pattern for a new Espressif part — the vendor framework lands first and community frameworks catch up over the following months, so budget for some ESP-IDF work if you adopt early.

Where the C61 Sits in the Line-Up

Espressif's numbering has become genuinely difficult to keep straight, so it is worth being precise. The C61 is the cost-reduced Wi-Fi 6 part: single core, no 5GHz, no Thread or Zigbee radio. The ESP32-C5 boards we have been covering add dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz operation. The C6 adds 802.15.4 for Thread and Zigbee, which matters for Matter deployments.

If your device only ever talks to a home router on 2.4GHz — which describes an enormous proportion of shipped IoT hardware — the C61 is the cheapest way to get modern radio behaviour, and the $9 development board makes evaluating it a trivial decision. The Practical Read

At $2 in five-packs, the calculation for anyone designing a new connected product changes. Wi-Fi 6 stops being an upgrade you justify and becomes the default you would have to argue against. Given that Target Wake Time alone can meaningfully extend battery life on a coin-cell sensor, that argument is going to be difficult to make.
