Arrakis Opens to Console Players

Funcom's open-world survival game Dune: Awakening launched on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on September 22, more than a year after its PC debut. It arrives with the feature many players have asked for since day one: a full single-player mode. And on Xbox, it lands straight into Game Pass.

  • Platforms: PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, PC via the Microsoft Store, and Xbox Cloud Gaming
  • Game Pass: included on launch day, with Xbox Play Anywhere and shared progression between console and PC
  • Single-player: the complete game, playable solo with three difficulty presets or custom rules
  • Performance modes: 60fps Performance and 30fps Quality, both at dynamic 4K, with higher native resolution on PS5 Pro and Series X

What Is in Dune Awakening's Single-Player Mode?

Funcom is clear that this is not a trimmed-down version. According to Bandai Namco's launch post, it is the full experience, start to finish, at your own pace. You can pick one of three difficulty presets or dive into custom settings covering sandstorm behavior, harvesting rates, XP multipliers, death penalties and building limits, per Xbox Wire.

That flexibility is a big deal for a survival game. Want a relaxed base-building campaign where the sand never tries to kill you? Dial it down. Want the full brutal Arrakis experience alone? Dial it up. It is the kind of choice that turns a multiplayer-first game into something much broader.

What Else Is New at Launch?

The console release ships alongside a hefty content drop for everyone:

  • Story finale: The Great Convention Part III concludes Book One of the story
  • Specializations: a new progression system across crafting, gathering, exploration, combat and sabotage
  • Augmentations: powerful modifiers for Tier 6 weapons and armor
  • New places: 7 new mission locations and 6 Imperial Testing Stations
  • PvP is optional: every part of the game can now be played entirely in PvE
  • Fresh look: full character re-customization with new hairstyles and tattoos

Funcom Chief Product Officer Scott Junior called it the best version yet of Dune: Awakening, now available on all three platforms.

Which Edition Should You Get?

Three editions are on offer: Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate. Xbox Wire notes that Deluxe includes the Season Pass covering the first four DLC packs, while Ultimate adds those packs plus extra cosmetics. Deluxe and Ultimate owners got a head start from September 17. Game Pass includes the game on Xbox, PC and cloud, and Bandai Namco says members get 20% off the Deluxe and Ultimate upgrades. Cross-play between platforms is planned after the console launch, and a Japanese release follows on October 29.

Why It Is Worth a Look

With Dune: Part Three arriving in cinemas on December 18, the timing could hardly be better for a trip to the desert. A solo mode, optional PvP and a finished Book One story make this the most approachable version of the game so far. It joins a busy week of launches that also includes Control Resonant. Keep up with the rest in our gaming coverage.
