Square displays are having a quiet moment in embedded projects — dashboards, instrument clusters, control panels and smart-home terminals all suit a 1:1 aspect ratio better than a widescreen panel. VIEWE has just made the format considerably more usable at size, with a pair of 7.6-inch square HDMI displays that connect to any board with a mini HDMI output and a spare USB port.

  • Two models: UEDX80800076-HMD-RB-A at 800×800 and UEDX12120076-HMD-RB-A at 1200×1200
  • 1,000 cd/m² brightness on a MIPI DSI IPS panel with a 135.36 × 135.36 mm active area
  • Mini HDMI 1.4 video in, 5V power over USB-C, with optional 5-point capacitive touch over USB-C

What Can Drive These Displays?

Anything with an HDMI output and a USB port, which is the entire point of the design. VIEWE lists Raspberry Pi single-board computers, NVIDIA Jetson developer kits and ordinary PCs as compatible hosts. On a Raspberry Pi you will need to add specific HDMI mode settings to config.txt to get the square resolution recognised, which is a familiar chore for anyone who has driven a non-standard panel from a Pi.

The touch layer is handled separately over USB-C as a standard capacitive input device, so it does not depend on DSI ribbon compatibility or vendor kernel patches. That separation is what makes these panels portable across such different hosts — it is a display and a mouse as far as the operating system is concerned.

Are the Specs Good Enough for Outdoor or Industrial Use?

1,000 cd/m² is bright. For context, a typical laptop screen sits somewhere between 250 and 400 nits, so this panel has real headroom for sunlit workshops, garage installations and equipment enclosures with ambient glare. The operating range runs from -20 to 70°C, and the backlight is rated for 30,000 hours.

At 250 grams the panels are heavy enough to need proper mounting but light enough for a printed bracket or a panel cutout. The 1200×1200 model in particular is a lot of pixel density for a 135mm square — 224 pixels per inch, which is enough for crisp small text on a gauge cluster or a status board.

Where the Square Format Earns Its Keep

A 1:1 display is the natural shape for round gauges, radar plots, album art, clock faces, thermostat dials and anything else that was originally a physical circular instrument. Widescreen panels waste half their area on those layouts. That is why square and round panels keep appearing in the ESP32 display ecosystem, and it is good to see the format scale up past the 2-inch novelty size into something you can build a real control panel around.

Priced at $85.29 for the 800×800 and $131.78 for the 1200×1200, these sit in the same territory as a mid-range Pi HAT rather than an industrial HMI.
