Bring Your Own Memory, Save Almost Three Hundred Dollars

Wildcat Lake mini PCs have been arriving steadily all summer, and almost all of them have shipped the same way: fixed memory, fixed storage, one price. MINISFORUM went the other direction on August 12, 2026, opening pre-orders for the Elite Mini M2 Air-304 as a barebone at $263 — chassis, board, and CPU, with the RAM and SSD left to you.

Why Does a Barebone Mini PC Matter?

Because the memory and storage in a pre-configured mini PC are almost always the worst value in the box. A $296 gap between the barebone and the 16GB/500GB configuration buys considerably more than 16GB and 500GB at retail — and if you have a drawer with a spare NVMe drive and a DDR5 SO-DIMM in it, which a lot of people reading this do, the gap is pure savings.

It also fixes the ceiling problem. The single SO-DIMM slot takes up to 64GB at 6400 MT/s, which is well beyond what any of the fixed-memory Wildcat Lake boxes offer. For anyone intending to run local models or a stack of containers, buying the barebone and putting 32GB or 64GB in it is the difference between a machine that fits the workload and one that does not.

The tradeoff is assembly, and it is minor — a slot, a screw, and a lid.

What Is Inside the Core 3 304?

Wildcat Lake is Intel's low-power part, and the core layout tells you the intent: one performance core paired with four low-power efficient cores. Single-core responsiveness is strong for the class, and the review context around the platform puts upgraders from older mini PCs at roughly 70% faster single-core benchmarks. Multi-core throughput and 3D graphics are where it gives ground to larger chips, which is the expected shape of a 15W to 28W design.

The NPU is rated at 15 TOPS, with the single-core Xe3 graphics contributing another 9 TOPS. That is the range for background inference — a local speech model, a vision pipeline on a camera feed, an on-device assistant — rather than for serving a large language model at speed. Treat it as a capability that runs while you work, not as an accelerator you point a workload at.

What Do You Get for Connectivity?

More than the price suggests. USB4 at 40 Gbps is the headline, because it means external GPU enclosures, high-speed storage, and daisy-chained displays are all on the table from a $263 chassis. Dual 2.5GbE ports make it viable as a small router, firewall, or homelab node rather than only a desktop.

Display output covers dual HDMI 2.0 plus dual DisplayPort over USB-C, and Wi-Fi 6E with Bluetooth 5.4 handles wireless. At 440 grams and 112 mm square it disappears behind a monitor.
