Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls Launches With 20 Fighters
Arc System Works' 4v4 Marvel tag fighter arrived August 6 on PS5 and PC with 20 launch characters and a day-one patch, starting at $59.99 standard.
Arc System Works making a Marvel tag fighter was always going to be a good idea on paper. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls arrived August 6 on PS5 and PC and turns out to be a good idea in practice too — a 4v4 tag-team brawler with 20 characters at launch, a day-one patch already addressing beta feedback, and the studio's usual habit of making 2D fighters look like animation cels that learned to move.
- Launched August 6, 2026 on PS5 and PC, developed by Arc System Works and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment
- 20 playable characters at launch, including Storm, Wolverine, Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Magik, Ghost Rider, Star-Lord, Doctor Doom, Carnage, and Deadpool
- Three editions: $59.99 standard, $84.99 Digital Deluxe, and a $99.99 ultimate edition
- A day-one patch shipped alongside launch, folding in feedback from the earlier beta; Phoenix Cyclops is confirmed as the first DLC character
Who Is on the Marvel Tokon Launch Roster?
Twenty characters is a healthy launch roster for a tag fighter, and the selection is smarter than a pure popularity contest. Storm, Wolverine, Spider-Man, Captain America, and Iron Man cover the obligations. Magik, Danger, Ghost Rider, and Star-Lord are the picks that suggest someone on the design team was thinking about movement archetypes rather than box office — Magik in particular is a teleport-heavy character concept that a fighting game can do things with.
On the other side you get Doctor Doom, Carnage, and Deadpool, which is a solid villain and wildcard bench. Phoenix Cyclops is already confirmed as the first DLC addition, so the roster plan extends past launch day.
What Does 4v4 Tag Fighting Actually Feel Like?
This is the structural question, and it is where Tokon differentiates itself from the 2v2 and 3v3 conventions the genre has settled into. Four fighters per side means the neutral game starts as a fairly intimate exchange and then escalates as assists and tag-ins stack up, which is a very different rhythm from the constant chaos of a traditional tag fighter.
Early coverage has consistently praised two things: the art direction, which pushes a fresh anime look over the roster rather than chasing the comics' house style, and the accessibility of the combat system relative to how flashy it looks. That combination — approachable inputs, spectacular output — has been Arc System Works' signature since Guilty Gear Xrd, and applying it to Marvel is close to the platonic use of the studio.
Which Edition Should You Buy?
The standard edition at $59.99 covers the full base game with all 20 launch characters, which is the version most people want. The $84.99 Digital Deluxe and $99.99 ultimate tiers add the usual character pass and cosmetic bundles.
My honest read: buy standard first. Fighting game character passes are worth it once you know whether the game clicks for you, and with a confirmed DLC roadmap the passes will still be there in a month. If you already know you play tag fighters seriously, the ultimate tier is a fine shortcut.
How Is Launch Going?
Encouragingly well. Arc System Works shipped a day-one patch built on beta feedback rather than saving fixes for a post-launch cycle, which is a good early signal about how the studio plans to support the game. Launching simultaneously on PS5 and PC also matters more than it sounds for a fighting game — a split launch fragments the player pool during the exact window when matchmaking needs population most.
It has been a strong stretch for the gaming category generally, between Final Fantasy XIV landing on Switch 2 and Spider-Man 2's free suit update. Marvel Tokon fits right in: a big license handed to a studio that actually knows the genre.
