Final Fantasy XIV Lands on Switch 2 With All Expansions

After years of players asking and Square Enix politely declining, Final Fantasy XIV finally has a Nintendo home. The Switch 2 version went live on Tuesday, August 4 at 7:00 pm JST, and it is not a trimmed-down port — it is the whole thing, every expansion, all the way through Dawntrail.

What Do You Get for $19.99?

The entry edition covers the base game and the expansion catalog, which is a genuinely absurd amount of content for the price — we are talking about a decade of story that regularly gets recommended as one of the best campaigns in the genre, Nintendo hardware or otherwise. The four tiers scale up to $97.99 for the collector-style bundle.

The 117 GB install is the number to plan around. That is not going on the internal storage of a Switch 2 alongside much else, so factor a microSD Express card into your budget if you have been putting one off.

How Does the Subscription Work on Switch 2?

This is the part worth reading carefully. The Switch 2 version requires its own separate subscription. If you already have remaining game time on another platform, Square Enix offers the Switch 2 subscription at half price — a reasonable accommodation for people double-dipping rather than migrating.

Everyone gets a free month during the early access window, which Square Enix is using to ramp server load gradually before official service begins. Given what launch-day congestion has done to this game's servers historically, a deliberate staged opening is the right call and a sign someone learned from experience.

Is This the Best Way to Play FFXIV?

Honestly? Probably not, if you have a PC with a decent GPU sitting under your desk — an MMO with this much on screen benefits from every frame you can throw at it.
