Lam Research Earnings: What Record $8.22B Revenue Tells Us
Lam Research posted record September-quarter revenue of $8.22 billion, up 22% sequentially, and guided to $8.60 billion as AI demand lifts fab spending.
If you want a single earnings report that shows how the AI boom flows all the way down to the factory floor, Lam Research just delivered it. The chip-equipment maker reported results for its September 2026 quarter on October 21, posting record revenue, profit and earnings per share as AI keeps pushing chipmakers to buy more advanced tools. Here is what the Lam Research earnings say about the business, without the hype.
- Revenue: a record $8.22 billion, up 22% from $6.72 billion in the June quarter and up about 54% from $5.32 billion a year earlier
- Profitability: GAAP gross margin of 52.3%, operating margin of 40.0%, and diluted EPS of $2.19 ($2.20 non-GAAP), up 21% sequentially
- Cash: cash and equivalents rose to $7.45 billion from $5.60 billion, and deferred revenue climbed to $2.66 billion
- Guidance: December-quarter revenue of $8.60 billion plus or minus $400 million, with EPS guided to $2.33 plus or minus $0.15
What Does Lam Research Do?
Lam makes the wafer fabrication equipment, or WFE, that chipmakers use to deposit, etch and clean the microscopic layers of a semiconductor. It is a picks-and-shovels business: whoever wins the AI chip race, they need these tools. CEO Tim Archer said in the release that AI is driving higher semiconductor demand and greater device complexity, and that operational execution helped Lam deliver records across revenue, profit and EPS. He also said the company's investments in technology inflections and capacity strengthen its ability to outgrow the WFE market as the industry expands.
How Strong Were Lam's September-Quarter Numbers?
Very strong by the company's own historical standards. Net income reached $2.75 billion, up from $2.28 billion a quarter earlier, and operating margin expanded 260 basis points to 40.0%. A few details stand out in the filing:
- Systems revenue, which covers new leading-edge tools, jumped to $5.73 billion from $4.25 billion in the June quarter and $3.55 billion a year earlier
- Customer support revenue, which covers services, spares and upgrades, held steady at $2.49 billion versus $1.78 billion a year ago
- Revenue by region: China 35%, Korea 20%, Taiwan 18%, Japan 9%, United States 8%, Southeast Asia 6% and Europe 4%
The growth in systems revenue is the headline: customers are buying new equipment, not just maintaining old fleets.
What Did Management Say About AI Demand?
According to The Motley Fool's summary of the earnings call, three themes stood out. First, Lam now expects cumulative revenue from its Aether dry resist technology, used in EUV lithography patterning, to reach about $2.5 billion by the end of the decade — roughly $1 billion above its earlier expectation. Second, the Customer Support Business Group is expected to grow more than 30% year over year in calendar 2026. Third, Archer described how AI storage is shifting demand toward faster SLC NAND, and because SLC stores fewer bits per cell, each percentage point of mix shift needs about 2% more installed wafer capacity for the same bit demand.
What Should Investors Watch Next?
The December-quarter guide calls for another step up, to $8.60 billion in revenue with a 52.5% gross margin and a 40.5% operating margin. Lam has the cash to keep investing in capacity, and it sits alongside peers that also reported strength this season, including ASML's record Q3 sales and Applied Materials' record revenue. As always, guidance is an estimate, not a promise, and none of this is investment advice — but as a read on where chip manufacturing is heading, it is hard to ask for a clearer signal.
