IBM Q3 2026 Earnings: Software Up 8% as Free Cash Flow Rises
IBM's Q3 2026 revenue rose 5% to $17.1 billion, led by 8% software growth and Red Hat up 11%, and IBM now sees free cash flow up more than $1 billion.
IBM turned in a solid third quarter. On October 21, 2026, the company reported revenue of $17.1 billion, up 5% year over year and 6% at constant currency, with software and infrastructure leading the way. IBM also raised its outlook for full-year free cash flow, now expecting growth of more than $1 billion, while keeping its revenue growth forecast of 4% to 5% at constant currency. For investors following enterprise AI and hybrid cloud, the IBM Q3 earnings report had plenty to digest.
- Revenue: $17.1 billion, up 5% (6% at constant currency)
- EPS: $2.31 GAAP diluted (up 26%) and $2.95 operating, which Constellation Research says topped estimates by 8 cents
- Software: $7.8 billion, up 8%, with Red Hat up 11% and Data up 19%
- Cash: $3.0 billion of free cash flow in Q3, up $0.7 billion, and $7.8 billion year to date
What Drove IBM's Q3 2026 Revenue Growth?
Software remains IBM's engine. The segment brought in $7.8 billion, up 8% (9% at constant currency). Within it, Hybrid Cloud (Red Hat) grew 11%, Data rose 19% and Transaction Processing gained 9%, while Automation dipped 3%. Constellation Research reports that Red Hat OpenShift now carries $2.4 billion in annual recurring revenue, and CFO James Kavanaugh said recent acquisitions Confluent and HashiCorp are performing well.
Consulting revenue was $5.3 billion, flat as reported and up 2% at constant currency. Infrastructure contributed $3.7 billion, up 4%, with Hybrid Infrastructure up 8% and Distributed Infrastructure up an impressive 31%. IBM Z revenue declined 20%, while Kavanaugh noted that 85% of IBM's mainframe customers are maintaining or growing capacity, per Constellation.
How Strong Was IBM's Profitability?
Profit trends were healthy. GAAP pre-tax income was $2.5 billion and GAAP net income was $2.2 billion, while operating (non-GAAP) pre-tax margin expanded 70 basis points to 19.3%. Operating EPS of $2.95 rose 11% from a year earlier. Gross margin eased slightly, to 56.8% GAAP and 58.5% operating.
Cash generation stood out. Net cash from operating activities was $4.0 billion in the quarter, up $0.9 billion, and IBM returned $1.6 billion to shareholders through dividends.
What Is IBM's Outlook for the Rest of 2026?
CEO Arvind Krishna said IBM continues to expect constant currency revenue growth of 4% to 5% for 2026 and now expects free cash flow to increase by more than $1 billion year over year. Kavanaugh tied part of that to productivity initiatives inside IBM, saying the company is using AI internally to drive profit and cash flow growth.
Krishna also highlighted that clients are increasingly deploying AI in ways that reshape whole operating models. On the call, he described application modernization and enterprise data as long-running tailwinds for Red Hat and Confluent, noting that most enterprise data still sits inside companies rather than in the public cloud.
What the IBM Earnings Mean for Investors
The quarter shows IBM leaning into recurring software revenue, which tends to be steadier than hardware or consulting. A raised cash flow outlook gives the company more room for dividends and continued investment, including in AI and quantum computing. As always, this is a business summary rather than investment advice.
