Genie 4 World Model: What Native Audio and Steering Unlock
Google DeepMind's Genie 4 world model adds native audio, live text steering and two-minute consistent scenes. Here's what it can do and who gets it first.
Google DeepMind has unveiled Genie 4, the newest version of its world model, and it is a genuine step up for real-time simulation. Announced on October 27, 2026, Genie 4 generates interactive worlds you can walk through with a keyboard, now with sound baked in and the ability to reshape the scene mid-session with plain-language prompts. For anyone following world models, the AI systems that simulate how environments look, sound and behave, this is one of the most capable public demonstrations yet.
- Release: announced October 27, 2026 as a research preview for trusted testers, with a waitlist open for Project Genie
- Native audio: Genie 4 is DeepMind's first real-time world model to generate music, ambient sound and character dialogue alongside the visuals
- Longer scenes: TechCrunch reports it holds a consistent scene for up to two minutes, double Genie 3's limit
- Next in line: Google AI Ultra subscribers in Project Genie and early-access Gemini API and Google AI Studio partners
What Is New in the Genie 4 World Model?
DeepMind describes Genie 4 as natively multimodal. Where earlier world models produced silent video you could steer, Genie 4 generates the soundscape with the world: wind in the trees, waves on a beach, and, most ambitiously, characters who speak and react to you in real time. DeepMind calls interactive human speech "the true frontier" of the release.
The model also leans heavily on the Gemini family. According to DeepMind, Gemini Omni anchors simulations in realistic appearance and behavior, while other Gemini models supply the reasoning that keeps a scene coherent over time. TechCrunch's briefing described Gemini as a kind of director that plans steps and checks frames while Genie renders the visuals.
DeepMind highlights four areas of progress:
- Real-time steering: type a prompt mid-simulation to change the weather, move the camera or add a new person or object, and Gemini adapts the request to fit the scene
- Physics: improved simulation of aerodynamics, collisions and other real-world interactions
- Human motion: characters that move naturally and respond to their surroundings, which DeepMind calls its most dramatic leap
- Sound: every world carries ambient audio matched to its setting, plus adaptive dialogue
How Do You Get Access to Genie 4?
For now, only trusted testers can use it. DeepMind says it will gather feedback before a broader release that starts with Google AI Ultra subscribers in Project Genie, Google's tool for generating explorable worlds from text or images, plus early-access partners on the Gemini API and Google AI Studio. TechCrunch reports that rollout is expected in the coming weeks. There is no published pricing yet, and DeepMind has not released benchmark scores.
Why World Models Matter Beyond Games
Interactive entertainment is the obvious use, but DeepMind frames Genie 4 as research infrastructure. Safe, endlessly varied simulations can serve as training grounds for robots and AI agents, the same idea behind efforts like NVIDIA's Cosmos world models for robotics. TechCrunch describes an experiment tied to Gemini Robotics in which a Gemini 4 Argon model broke a task into steps that Genie 4 then simulated live, a glimpse of testing robot behavior before it happens in the physical world.
Early testers are also pointing to film prototyping. DeepMind engineer Diego Rivas told reporters the real-time loop is most valuable during ideation and storyboarding, when creators need to try ideas quickly without breaking their flow.
Responsible Rollout and Honest Limits
DeepMind is shipping carefully. Every video and audio output from Genie 4 carries SynthID, Google's imperceptible watermark for identifying AI-generated content, and the staged trusted-tester release is designed to surface problems early. The team is also upfront about where the research is headed next: object permanence and fine detail can drift in longer sessions or after many prompt edits, and legible in-world text, spatial accuracy and audio precision remain active areas of work.
That candor is refreshing, and it makes the progress easier to judge. Doubling scene consistency, adding speech and opening live editing in a single release is a big leap for interactive simulation. For more on the models shaping the field, browse our AI coverage.
