GOG Preservation Program Adds Ghostwire Tokyo and Oblivion
Ghostwire: Tokyo arrives DRM-free on GOG with Bethesda.NET login removed, and Oblivion GOTY Deluxe gains modern controller support, both 75% off.
Good news for anyone who likes to own their games: GOG's Preservation Program grew this week. On October 15, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition Deluxe and Ghostwire: Tokyo joined the program. Ghostwire is brand new to the DRM-free store, and both games launched with 75% discounts.
- Ghostwire: Tokyo debuts on GOG DRM-free, with the Bethesda.NET integration and login screen removed
- Oblivion GOTY Deluxe gains modern controller support, controller hotplugging and all five original languages
- Both games have validated stability and verified Windows 10 and 11 compatibility
- Launch sale: Ghostwire is $14.99 (75% off $59.99) until October 29, and Oblivion GOTY Deluxe is $4.99 until October 26
What Is the GOG Preservation Program?
GOG's Preservation Program is the store's pledge to keep older games working on modern PCs. Games in the program get fixes for compatibility, stability and quality-of-life problems that build up as Windows and hardware move on. GOG's store page describes Ghostwire as "2026-ready" and says the work is maintained with support from GOG Patrons. Because GOG titles are DRM-free, you need no activation or online connection, and your installer keeps working even if a publisher's servers shut down.
What's Changed in Ghostwire: Tokyo on GOG?
Tango Gameworks' supernatural action game is set in a mysteriously emptied Tokyo, where you fight spirits with elemental hand-gestures. The GOG version arrives with some welcome cleanup, according to the changelog reported by GamingOnLinux:
- The Bethesda.NET integration and the login prompt on the main menu are gone
- The Bethesda.NET login bonus now unlocks automatically on first launch, so nobody misses it
- Stability has been validated and Windows 10 and 11 compatibility verified
The Deluxe Edition also includes the Streetwear Outfit Pack and the Shinobi Outfit and Kunai Weapon. SteamDeckHQ, which tested both games on Valve's handheld, says Ghostwire needs a few settings compromises on Steam Deck but is still enjoyable.
How Does Oblivion Play on Modern PCs Now?
Twenty years on, the original Oblivion just got a meaningful tune-up (version 1.2.0416 GOG v3):
- Modern controllers: DualSense, DualShock 4, Xbox, Switch Pro, Luna, Stadia and Nvidia Shield pads now work
- Controller hotplugging: plug in or swap a controller mid-session
- Fixes: Alt+Tab task switching works properly, and a memory leak during controller rebinding is gone
- Languages: the GOTY Edition now includes English, German, French, Italian and Spanish
- Better defaults: an optimized default button layout
SteamDeckHQ reports that Oblivion "runs like a charm" on the Deck. That makes the $4.99 sale price an easy way to revisit Cyrodiil, or a good companion to Oblivion Remastered on Switch 2.
Why Preservation Wins Matter
Games are a cultural medium, and keeping them playable takes ongoing work. Each title that enters a preservation program is one less game lost to broken launchers or dead login servers. Linux players benefit too: GOG has told GamingOnLinux that GOG Galaxy for Linux is in development, and Nvidia has added GOG library syncing to GeForce NOW. Find more PC gaming news in our gaming hub.
