Twenty years of Elder Scrolls games, and not one mainline entry had ever run on Nintendo hardware. That streak ended on August 11, 2026, when Bethesda launched The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on Nintendo Switch 2 — the Unreal Engine 5 rebuild that hit other platforms in April 2025, now portable.

Is the Physical Release Actually Complete?

Yes, and that deserves more attention than it usually gets. The full game plus all ten DLC packs sit on the cartridge, and the game does not require a day-one download to play.

That is increasingly rare, and it is the kind of thing that matters years from now rather than today. A cartridge that contains the whole game is a game that still works when the servers do not. For a two-decade-old RPG being introduced to a new platform and, presumably, a lot of players who were not born when it shipped, shipping it complete on physical media is a genuinely good call.

The DLC list is the full historical set, including the infamous Horse Armor Pack — the one that started the entire microtransaction conversation back in 2006, now just quietly included at no extra cost. There is something pleasant about that.

How Does Oblivion Remastered Run on Switch 2?

The targets are 1080p docked and 900p in handheld, both at 30 frames per second, with NVIDIA DLSS doing the upscaling. There is no 60fps mode.

DLSS is doing serious work here. Reviewers comparing versions found the Switch 2 build delivers a sharper image than the Xbox Series S release, despite running lower settings, and generally landing above what the low PC preset would suggest. That is the same pattern that has shown up repeatedly on this hardware — the machine punches above its raw specification because the upscaler is very good.

The 30fps ceiling is stable through most of the game, with the open world and some densely populated interiors being where it works hardest. For an Unreal Engine 5 rebuild of a sprawling open-world RPG running in handheld mode, that is a reasonable outcome, and reviews have generally landed on "better than expected" rather than the reverse.

Why This Version Is Worth a Look

Oblivion is a strange, funny, generous game that a lot of people have only heard about. It is the one with the AI-driven daily schedules for every NPC, the guild questlines people still talk about, and an alien-mushroom expansion in Shivering Isles that no other RPG has quite matched for tone.

Handheld is arguably its ideal form. This is a game made of long evenings and small errands — clearing a ruin, delivering a letter, getting completely sidetracked for three hours. Being able to put it down mid-errand and pick it up on a train suits it better than a television ever did.
