Sucker Punch Finally Opens the Vault

Ghost of Yotei has been one of the PS5's most quietly admired open worlds, and one of its most conspicuously DLC-free. That ended on August 12, 2026, when Sony Interactive Entertainment and Sucker Punch Productions announced a story expansion, an entirely new mode, and a Complete Edition — all arriving October 1.

  • Ghost of Yotei: Echoes of Sekigahara is a new narrative adventure split between the past and present of the main timeline
  • Most Wanted is a single-player roguelike survival mode built around bounty runs
  • Complete Edition launches October 1 for $69.99, with a $14.99 upgrade path for existing owners
  • Quality-of-life updates ship alongside the new content

What Is Echoes of Sekigahara About?

The expansion sends players back to Atsu in the present day while weaving in sequences from an earlier era, and opens up a location the base game never let you reach — an unseen valley sheltering a gang of warriors known as the Vipers.

Splitting a story across two time periods is a smart structural choice for a game whose central character is defined by what happened before the player arrived. It also gives Sucker Punch an excuse to build combat encounters with a different texture, since a flashback does not have to respect the progression state of the main campaign.

How Does the Most Wanted Roguelike Mode Work?

This is the surprise. Most Wanted is Sucker Punch's take on roguelike structure, and it uses the bounty system as the run framework: you accept a bounty to begin a run, then earn perks by eliminating enemies along the way.

The genuinely exciting part is the roster. Most Wanted unlocks playable characters beyond Atsu, and the reveal trailer showed Oyuki wielding a kusarigama and Nagato carrying a yari alongside Atsu's dual katana. A kusarigama — a sickle chained to a weight — and a spear are not stance variations on a sword. They are different combat grammars entirely, with different reach, timing, and crowd control.

That is what makes this more than a survival mode bolted onto a finished game. A studio with combat this precise handing players two new weapon philosophies inside a run-based structure is the kind of thing that keeps a game alive for another year. It is a similar instinct to the replayability-first design we saw in Grounded 2's expansion into a whole new zone.

Is the Complete Edition Worth It?

For newcomers, $69.99 for the base game plus expansion plus Most Wanted is straightforward value. For the people who already bought and finished Ghost of Yotei, the $14.99 upgrade is the number that matters, and it is priced sensibly — a story expansion plus a fully-featured mode with new playable characters is a lot of content for the price of a couple of coffees.

October 1 also lands Ghost of Yotei in a busy autumn window, but a returning single-player action game with a new mode attached is a different proposition than a new release fighting for attention. If you shelved it after the credits, this is a reason to come back. Our gaming coverage will have more as the release approaches — and after a summer of strong catalogue additions like Oblivion Remastered arriving on Switch 2, October is shaping up nicely.
