Backyard Survival Goes Swimming

Every survival game eventually has to answer the water question, and most of them answer it badly — a swim animation, a drowning meter, and a polite suggestion that you go back to land. Obsidian and Eidos Montréal went the other way. The Into the Abyss update for Grounded 2 landed on August 11, 2026, and it turns Brookhollow Park's pond into a fully explorable three-dimensional space.

  • Three new biomes: Gnarly Bark, the Bayou, and Skunk Pond
  • Full underwater exploration with two new armor sets — a wetsuit for extra oxygen and a diving suit with unlimited oxygen and heavy boots for walking the pond floor
  • The Toe-biter, a new amphibious buggy that travels on land and water
  • Target-lock combat for underwater fights, plus a new harpoon ranged weapon
  • Simultaneous PlayStation 5 launch, alongside PC and Xbox Series X and S

What Does Into the Abyss Add?

Three biomes, and they are structurally different from one another rather than reskins. Gnarly Bark is built vertically around a large hollow tree, which means the traversal problem is climbing. The Bayou is a swamp of shallow, muddy water — the awkward in-between zone where you are neither swimming nor walking cleanly. Skunk Pond is the real headline: genuine full 3D underwater exploration where up and down matter as much as forward.

The progression gating is handled through gear rather than invisible walls. The wetsuit extends your oxygen supply and gets you into the shallows. The diving suit removes the oxygen limit entirely and adds heavy boots that let you walk along the pond floor instead of drifting above it. That is a nice bit of design — the two suits are not an upgrade path so much as two different relationships with the water.

New materials and building modules also let you construct an underwater base, which is the kind of thing that quietly doubles a survival game's late hours.

How Does Underwater Combat Work?

This is where the update does its most interesting work. Fighting in three dimensions is historically miserable, because the thing you are attacking is rarely on the same plane as your reticle and everything drifts.

The answer here is a target-lock system that holds an enemy so your attacks land where you intend, paired with a new harpoon for ranged fights. Preview coverage suggests the pond is genuinely dangerous rather than a scenic detour — the deeper sections come with creatures scaled to make the diving suit feel earned rather than automatic.

Is Grounded 2 on PS5 Now?

Yes. The Into the Abyss update ships simultaneously with the PlayStation 5 launch, so PS5 players arrive with the pond already in the game rather than catching up to a year of updates.

Worth being clear about what this is not: Grounded 2 remains in Early Access and Xbox Game Preview through 2026, with a Playgrounds update and further seasonal content queued ahead of a 1.0 release. This is a major content drop and a platform expansion, not the finish line. Obsidian has been unusually transparent about that roadmap, which is the right way to run an Early Access title.

For a game about being two inches tall in a backyard, adding an entire vertical body of water is the most on-theme expansion possible.
