OpenAI subscribers on its top plans just got a lot more room to work. On October 29, 2026, OpenAI doubled usage limits for ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium, and in an email to subscribers reported by BleepingComputer on November 1, it outlined two more changes: ChatGPT Work features are coming into regular Chat, and ChatGPT and Codex will draw from one shared allowance.

  • Doubled limits: Work and Codex allowances doubled for the Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 tiers plus Business Premium, effective October 29.
  • Merged experience: OpenAI will test a combined Chat and Work tab with a small group of users in the coming weeks.
  • Shared allowance: ChatGPT and Codex usage will draw from the same pool, while Unlimited Instant stays outside the cap.
  • Dots unchanged: extended limits for dots, OpenAI's background agents, continue and still count separately.

What Did OpenAI Change About ChatGPT Pro Limits?

The doubling was announced on X by Thibault Sottiaux, an OpenAI product and engineering lead, and it took effect immediately. Android Authority reported that OpenAI had earlier planned to reduce limits on the Pro 200 tier, and that subscriber feedback led the company to keep those limits and then double every Pro tier instead. Sottiaux said Work and Codex usage on Pro 200 will stay at the higher level, and that OpenAI will keep shipping efficiency improvements that stretch effective usage further over time.

OpenAI has not published exact numerical allowances for each tier, so the practical takeaway is relative: heavy users of agentic tools now have roughly twice the headroom they had a week ago. That is good news for anyone running long Codex sessions or multi-step Work tasks, which tend to burn through allowances fastest.

How Will Chat and Work Merge?

ChatGPT Work, which we explored when it launched in our ChatGPT Work and GPT-5.6 explainer, has lived in its own tab for agent-style tasks. According to the email BleepingComputer saw, OpenAI wants users to move from an ordinary conversation into a bigger task without switching modes. You could start by brainstorming, then bring in files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation or complete tasks on the web while you review its progress.

The combined experience starts as a small test before a wider rollout. Codex will remain a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app.

What Does a Shared ChatGPT and Codex Allowance Mean?

Under the new model, both products draw from one pool. Not every message counts equally. OpenAI says Unlimited Instant conversations are included in the subscription and do not touch the shared allowance, while more advanced models and complex agentic tasks consume more. Subscribers will be able to check remaining usage and reset times under Settings, then Usage. If you run out, you can wait for the reset, upgrade your plan or buy credits for eligible features.

For developers who split time between chatting and coding agents, one visible meter is simpler than juggling two. It also pairs well with OpenAI's always-on dots agents, whose extended limits remain separate for now.

Who Benefits Most?

Pro subscribers who lean on Codex and Work for real projects are the clear winners. Doubled limits, a single dashboard for usage and a smoother path from idea to finished task all point toward ChatGPT acting less like a chatbot and more like a coworker.
