OpenAI Dots Explained: Always-On Agents for ChatGPT Pro
OpenAI dots are always-on agents with their own cloud computer, reaching 4,000+ apps. See who gets them first, what they can do and how permissions work.
OpenAI used its DevDay keynote on September 29, 2026 to introduce dots, a new kind of ChatGPT agent that keeps working toward your goals even when you are not in the chat window. Instead of answering one prompt and stopping, each dot gets its own cloud computer and browser and carries on, which makes it a clear step toward the always-on AI agents the industry has been promising all year.
- According to TechCrunch and BGR, each dot runs on OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra model and works from its own cloud computer and browser.
- Dots connect to more than 4,000 apps through plugins and can be reached from ChatGPT, Codex, Slack and Microsoft Teams, with SMS listed as coming soon.
- At launch they are offered on the ChatGPT Pro plan at $200 a month and on Business Premium, according to BGR's DevDay roundup.
- When idle, a dot can run proactive research over connected apps using read-only tools.
What are OpenAI dots?
A dot is best understood as a long-running assistant with a workspace of its own. You give it a goal, it plans the work, uses the browser and connected apps, and keeps going in the background. TechCrunch describes the launch as a bubbly, avatar-style take on agents, and the framing matters: OpenAI wants people to think of a dot as a teammate that is always around rather than a tool you open and close.
This follows the company's push toward agents that we covered in our look at the OpenAI Agents API and the Codex harness. Dots take the same idea and package it for end users rather than developers.
How do dots use your apps and computer?
Reports say dots can tap plugins for more than 4,000 apps. While idle, they do proactive research across the apps you connect, using read-only tools so that browsing your data does not change it. With your permission, a dot can also operate your laptop, which lets it handle tasks that live outside the cloud.
OpenAI also says dots integrate with Microsoft Agent 365 security controls, a detail aimed at workplaces that need administrators to see and govern what agents do. That is a sensible companion to a product designed to run unattended.
Who can use dots today?
BGR reports that dots are available on the $200 ChatGPT Pro tier and on Business Premium, and not on the $100 Pro plan. Availability is limited in a few regions at launch, including the EEA, Switzerland and the UK. BGR also notes the usage multiplier for new $200 subscribers changes from 20x to 10x. Pricing and plan details can shift quickly after a keynote, so check OpenAI's pages before subscribing.
Why always-on agents matter
Most assistants are reactive. They wait for a prompt, answer, and go quiet. An agent that keeps a standing goal, researches in the background and surfaces results later changes the rhythm of how people use AI. Meta is aiming at a similar idea for everyday tasks with its Muse agent in WhatsApp, and dots push the concept into paid productivity and work tools.
The design choices to watch are the practical ones: read-only research by default, permission before laptop control, and enterprise oversight hooks. Those details will decide whether people trust an agent to keep working while they are away. Follow the rest of the field in our AI coverage.
