WLV-01 Puts Swappable Sensors on a Raspberry Pi 5

The WLV-01 is a hackable Raspberry Pi 5 camera with swappable color and mono sensors up to Micro Four Thirds, with kits starting around $259.

A Camera Where the Sensor Is a Consumable

Most cameras treat the sensor as the one part you can never change. The WLV-01, a Kickstarter project from Malcolm-Jamal Wilson covered by CNX Software on September 18, inverts that: the body is a Raspberry Pi 5 with a waist-level viewfinder, and the sensor arrives as a swappable cartridge. Why Swappable Sensors Matter More Than Megapixels

Buying a monochrome camera today means buying a second camera. Dedicated mono bodies exist, they are excellent, and they cost roughly what a used car costs, because the manufacturer has to build an entire product around a sensor without a Bayer filter. That pricing has nothing to do with the sensor being expensive and everything to do with the market being small.

On a single-board computer the calculus changes. The Raspberry Pi 5 does not care which CSI sensor is attached, libcamera handles the plumbing, and so the mono variant of a sensor becomes a cartridge swap rather than a separate purchase. The same logic covers full-spectrum work, where the infrared cut filter is removed for astrophotography or vegetation imaging. Three specialist cameras collapse into one body and three modules.

The sensor range here is unusually wide for a maker project. The IMX477 is the familiar Raspberry Pi HQ part at 1/2.3-inch. The IMX294 and IMX492 are Micro Four Thirds class, which is a genuinely different photographic experience — enough sensor area that depth of field and low-light behaviour start resembling a real system camera rather than a webcam with ambitions.

What Lenses Does It Take?

The native mount is a manual Sony E-mount, chosen because its short flange distance means almost everything else adapts onto it. The project lists adapters for C-mount, M-mount, M42, Nikon F, Pentax K, Canon FD and Leica M. In practice that opens the entire second-hand manual lens market, which is where the fun in this kind of build usually lives.

Software is a custom Python application built on Picamera2 and libcamera, with RAW DNG and JPEG capture, 1080p and 4K H.264 video, and a web interface for live preview, image review and file management. That last part is the tell that this is a Pi project rather than a camera project — being able to browse the shots from a laptop on the same network is not something a conventional body offers.

The creator also sells an assembled variant directly. A WLV-01 HQ configuration listed on the project's own store runs $450 with the Raspberry Pi HQ colour sensor, a Pi 5, charger, C-mount adapter, Waveshare display and a Geekworm X1200 battery board, with lenses and 18650 cells bought separately.

Should You Back It or Build It?

The digital files tier is the interesting one at CA$85. If you already own a Pi 5, a 3D printer and a drawer of adapters, that is the cheapest path into a Micro Four Thirds mono camera that exists. Delivery for the files is targeted at October 2026, with hardware kits following in December 2026 and January 2027 — normal crowdfunding timelines, with the normal crowdfunding caveat that dates slip.

It sits in a good lineage of Pi camera builds, from the pocket-sized PiShot on a Pi Zero 2 W to industrial work like the dual GMSL2 camera HAT for the Pi 5.
