Uber Tokenized Treasury Pilot: Idle Cash That Works 24/7
Uber piloted buying a tokenized Franklin Templeton money market fund with HSBC tokenized deposits on Canton, with redemptions possible even on weekends.
Corporate treasury is not usually where blockchain stories get exciting, but this one has a very relatable problem at its center: cash sitting in a bank account earns little, while moving it into a money market fund means waiting for settlement before you can spend it. According to CoinDesk, which reported a press release shared on October 30, 2026, Uber has piloted a way to have both: tokenized fund shares that can be bought and redeemed around the clock, including on weekends.
- Participants: Uber, HSBC, Franklin Templeton, Tradeweb and Fireblocks
- Mechanics: Uber used HSBC's tokenized deposits to buy shares of Franklin Templeton's tokenized money market fund through Tradeweb
- Network: transactions settled on the Canton Network using delivery-versus-payment
- Status: a pilot; no dollar amounts were disclosed
How Did Uber's Tokenized Money Market Pilot Work?
Per CoinDesk's report, the flow had four moving parts. HSBC supplied tokenized bank deposits, which are digital representations of ordinary bank money. Franklin Templeton supplied tokenized money market fund shares. Tradeweb provided the trading venue, and Fireblocks provided wallet infrastructure. Because payment and fund shares moved together in one settlement on Canton, neither side had to trust the other to deliver first.
The detail that matters most for a company like Uber: it could redeem part of its holdings over a weekend. Uber pays drivers and couriers constantly, not just during banking hours, so cash that can earn yield on Friday and still be spendable on Saturday night is genuinely useful.
Why Tokenized Deposits Matter for Corporate Cash
Odette Rodrigues, Uber's vice president of corporate finance, treasury and capital markets, told CoinDesk the solution gives the company more flexibility to optimize yield on available cash while meeting payment obligations, reducing the need to hold liquidity buffers. She called it an important first step toward a more efficient, always-on model for managing working capital.
That "liquidity buffer" point is the real economic story. Large companies keep extra cash parked and idle precisely because traditional settlement is slow and closed on weekends. If tokenized rails let them keep less idle cash, the yield gain scales with balance sheet size.
Is Canton Becoming the Institutional Tokenization Hub?
HSBC had already tested its tokenised deposit service on the Canton Network in April 2026, simulating atomic settlement against other digital assets. This pilot moves from simulation to a real corporate treasury use case. It joins a busy month for tokenized funds, including J.P. Morgan's tokenized money market funds on Solana and DTCC's tokenization service launch.
One caution: details so far come from a single outlet's reading of the press release, and the companies have not published amounts or a production timeline. Treat it as a promising proof of concept, not a live product. More on real-world assets is in our crypto coverage.
