Tokenization just crossed one of its biggest thresholds yet. On October 28, 2026, The Depository Trust Company, a subsidiary of DTCC, launched the DTCC Tokenization Service (DTS), letting eligible firms mint tokenized versions of securities held at DTC and move them to digital wallets. Given that DTC custodies more than $114 trillion in assets, this is a production launch from the core of US market plumbing, not another pilot.

  • Live since October 28: DTS creates tokenized securities entitlements, or digital twins, that can be converted between traditional and tokenized form
  • 20 firms signed: including Bank of America, Barclays, BNP Paribas, Citadel Securities, Citi, Fidelity Investments, J.P. Morgan, Morgan Stanley, State Street and UBS
  • Two networks at launch: the Canton Network and DTCC's private Besu network, with Stellar and Circle's Arc anticipated in 2027
  • Eligible assets: Russell 1000 constituents, ETFs tracking major indices and US Treasury securities, under a December 2025 SEC no-action letter

How Does the DTCC Tokenization Service Work?

DTS mints tokens that represent real securities already held at DTC. According to DTCC, the tokenized versions keep the ownership rights, investor protections and economic entitlements of the originals, and official ownership records stay with DTC. Users can convert positions back and forth between traditional and tokenized forms, which keeps liquidity in today's markets while opening new on-chain uses.

CoinDesk reports that DTCC targets conversions in 15 minutes or less, and that a DTCC spokesperson put the market value of the eligible securities at about $30 trillion. DTCC itself highlights collateral that can be mobilized "within minutes" as a core benefit.

Which Firms Are Using DTCC Tokenized Securities?

The 20 DTC Participants signed so far also include Alpaca, Apex Clearing, Brown Brothers Harriman, Clear Street, DriveWealth, Edward Jones, Interchange Clearing, Marex, Mirae Asset Securities (USA) and Velocity Capital. Future users will be onboarded on a rolling basis.

Beyond direct users, DTCC lined up an ecosystem of wallet, custody and infrastructure partners, among them BitGo Bank & Trust, Blockdaemon, Broadridge, Fireblocks, Ondo, Talos, Tradeweb and Virtu. The service was shaped with input from more than 150 firms in DTC's Digital Assets Solutions Industry Working Group.

From Pilot to Production: Why This Launch Matters

This launch completes a roadmap we tracked when DTCC's tokenized securities pilot went live in July, when more than 30 firms completed initial limited-production trades. The jump from pilot to a signed client base matters because institutional adoption depends on trusted infrastructure, not just new blockchains.

The data points worth watching next:

  • Network expansion: Stellar (SEP-41) and Arc (ERC-20) are slated for 2027, with more layer-1 and layer-2 networks planned based on demand
  • Collateral mobility: faster movement of tokenized Treasuries could make margin and repo workflows far more efficient
  • Participant growth: how quickly the list grows beyond the first 20 firms

DTCC CEO Frank La Salla called the launch the culmination of years of work to bring tokenized securities into a regulated framework. For real-world asset tokenization, that is a strong signal that on-chain markets are becoming part of mainstream finance. Track the trend in our crypto coverage.
