Studio MDHR Reveals Two New Cuphead Games at Summer Game Fest

Cuphead is back — and doubly so. Studio MDHR surprised Summer Game Fest with an 8-bit SEGA Master System platformer and a brand-new hand-animated adventure.

Hold onto your teacups, because the most charming run-and-gun heroes in gaming are coming back — *twice*. At Summer Game Fest, Studio MDHR pulled off one of the show's best surprises by announcing not one but two brand-new Cuphead games, and the first one is so delightfully retro it almost defies belief.

A New Cuphead Game... for the SEGA Master System

The headliner is Mighty Cuphead Adventure, an 8-bit action platformer programmed in classic Assembly Language and built to the exact specifications of the SEGA Master System. Yes, you read that right — a 2026 release engineered for 1980s hardware, complete with a physical cartridge. It's the kind of gloriously committed craftsmanship that defines this studio.

Unlike the original Cuphead's boss-rush structure, *Mighty Cuphead Adventure* is a fast-paced 2D side-scrolling platformer with both single-player and local two-player co-op, so you and a friend can run, jump, and blast as Cuphead and Mugman. And while it's literally a Master System game at heart, you won't need to dig out vintage hardware: it's also coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

The Hand-Animated Magic Returns Too

If an 8-bit spin-off weren't enough, Studio MDHR confirmed a second, fully hand-animated Cuphead adventure is in early development — keeping the lush 1930s rubber-hose cartoon style that made the original a visual landmark. Details are scarce for now, but the promise of more of that painstaking, frame-by-frame artistry is enough to make any fan grin.

Craftsmanship Over Everything

Studio MDHR co-founder Chad Moldenhauer summed up the studio's ethos perfectly: *"Craftsmanship is at the heart of everything we do."* That philosophy shines through in both projects — one honoring a beloved retro console down to the assembly code, the other doubling down on the hand-drawn animation that set Cuphead apart.

Why This Double Reveal Is Pure Joy

In an era of ever-bigger budgets and photoreal graphics, there's something wonderfully refreshing about a celebrated studio choosing to build for a 40-year-old console *and* hand-animate a new adventure cel by cel. It's a love letter to gaming history and to the players who fell for these characters. No release dates yet — but two new Cuphead games is a reason for platformer fans everywhere to celebrate.
