Risk of Rain 2 Hallowed Concepts: Is the $14.99 DLC Good?
Risk of Rain 2: Hallowed Concepts adds 2 survivors, Trials and Hexes for $14.99, and the expansion is sitting at Very Positive on Steam after 830 reviews.
Risk of Rain 2: Hallowed Concepts is off to a strong start. The new expansion for the co-op roguelike released on October 8, 2026, for $14.99, and Steam players have already pushed it to a Very Positive rating. For a game that has been soaking up our weekends since 2019, that is a lovely reason to drop back onto Petrichor V.
- Release date: October 8, 2026, on Steam for $14.99.
- Steam rating: Very Positive, with 681 of 830 reviews positive (about 82%) as of October 11.
- New survivors: Acolyte and Enforcer.
- New systems: three Trials, Hexes that reward Hallowed Items, and a curio called the N'tormat.
What Is in the Hallowed Concepts Expansion?
According to the Steam store page, Hallowed Concepts sends players into unexplored regions of Petrichor V and the cult-like world of N'kuhana. Developer Gearbox Software and publisher 2K have packed in two playable survivors:
- Acolyte: a fighter who mixes close-range glaive attacks with ranged strikes that damage an enemy's soul.
- Enforcer: a tactical survivor who can create cover and hold the line as a defensive vanguard, or push aggressively into a fight.
Enforcer is a name longtime fans will recognize from the first Risk of Rain, so seeing a shield-carrying bruiser back in 3D is a treat.
The new systems lean into risk and reward, which is the whole point of this series. There are three Trials called the Winnowings of Survival, Predation and Mortality. Hexes are curses you choose to endure in exchange for Hallowed Items. And the N'tormat is a new curio whose pages grant powerful abilities at a cost. New enemies round things out.
Is Hallowed Concepts Worth $14.99?
Early players seem to think so. When I checked Steam's review data on October 11, the expansion had 830 reviews and 681 of them were positive, which works out to about 82% and earns the Very Positive label. GamesRadar reported on the warm reception on October 10, noting the expansion "debuts to Very Positive Steam reviews."
Launch reviews move around, so treat that number as a snapshot. Some early reviews also mention bugs that the team will want to iron out. But the overall mood is clearly happy, and happy is what you want from a game built on "one more run."
Do Your Friends Need to Own the DLC?
Here is the best bit for co-op groups. Per the Steam page, only one player in a lobby needs to own Hallowed Concepts for its monsters, levels and items to show up for everyone. Players without the expansion cannot pick the new survivors or permanently unlock its content, but they can still join in and see what the fuss is about.
That is a generous setup. One friend buys it, the whole squad gets the new stages and loot, and everyone can decide later whether they want Acolyte or Enforcer for themselves.
Why This Is Good News for Roguelike Fans
Risk of Rain 2 is seven years old and still getting meaty expansions with fresh characters and new ways to break a run. That kind of long-term support keeps a community alive. If you picked up something in the Steam Autumn Sale and are already hunting for the next co-op obsession, this is an easy recommendation, and fans of run-based games who enjoyed Slay the Spire 2's four-player co-op will feel right at home.
Grab three friends, pick a Hex and try not to stand in the purple stuff. More in our gaming coverage.
