Monster Hunter Wilds Ascendance Takes the Hunt Skyward
Capcom's Ascendance expansion adds the floating Skybound Eyrie, pack-hunting monster Araketa and a Boost Bracer combat mechanic, playable at TGS 2026.
Monster Hunter Finally Uses the Vertical Axis
Every Monster Hunter map since forever has been a brilliant piece of horizontal level design, and every one of them has treated "up" as a place where cliffs happen. Ascendance, the big paid expansion for Monster Hunter Wilds, throws that out. The new locale is the Skybound Eyrie, a realm of floating islands and crumbling ruins where your Seikret catches updrafts, rockets skyward and glides between landmasses. The expansion is playable for the first time right now, and it is a genuinely different rhythm.
- New locale: the Skybound Eyrie, floating ruins tied to Wyveria, built around vertical traversal on Seikret updrafts
- New combat system: Boost Action, triggered by the Boost Bracer, unlocking weapon-specific attacks for a limited window
- Monsters: new bird wyvern Araketa, which hunts in packs led by an alpha, plus a reworked Elder Dragon Teostra and the returning Gundoraja
- Release: in development for a 2027 launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, adding a new story, areas and Master Rank
What Is the Boost Bracer and How Does Boost Action Work?
New Monster Hunter mechanics live or die on whether they respect the combos veterans have spent hundreds of hours internalising. Boost Action passes that test. Activating the Boost Bracer unleashes weapon-specific attacks and temporarily empowers certain existing actions, and the crucial design detail is that it slots into your existing strings rather than replacing them.
The gauge fills gradually on its own and faster when you land hits and destroy wounds with Focus Strike. That is a smart loop — it rewards the aggressive, wound-focused play Wilds already encourages, instead of introducing a separate resource you have to babysit. You are not learning a new game. You are getting a new gear in the one you already know.
The Skybound Eyrie Changes How You Chase
The traversal is the headline. Mounting your Seikret in the Eyrie lets you catch thermals and launch upward, then glide across gaps between islands without a loading transition. Chasing a fleeing monster stops being a run along the ground and becomes a three-dimensional pursuit, which is something this series has flirted with for years and never fully committed to.
Capcom has built the new monster to exploit it. Araketa hunts in coordinated packs, with an alpha variant directing synchronised attacks, and it inflates its wings to blast hunters backward or rocket forward in heavy charges. A pack monster in an arena full of gaps and updrafts is a different problem from a pack monster on a flat plain — position suddenly has an altitude component.
Teostra Is Back and Meaner
Elder Dragon Teostra returns with reworked patterns, including a new Supernova and follow-up attacks, and appears in the Oilwell Basin where environmental hazards like oil mud complicate the fight. Veterans who could read Teostra in their sleep will need to relearn a few tells — a foreleg slam that can be countered on precise timing gets specific mention.
The returning Gundoraja gets the most Monster Hunter detail of the lot: it can be picked up and thrown at other targets for serious damage, which is exactly the kind of gleefully silly systems interaction this series does better than anyone.
When Can You Play It?
Ascendance is in development for 2027 across PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with no firm date yet. The hands-on build shown this week featured three quest types, so what has been demonstrated is a slice rather than the full expansion.
For a game that launched to enormous numbers, a Master Rank expansion built around a new movement verb is the right kind of second wind — the same instinct behind the franchise longevity we wrote about in Dragon Quest passing 100 million games sold.
