Mecha Systems Puts a Modular Linux Computer in Your Pocket
The Mecha Comet is a handheld Linux computer built the way a workbench tool should be: a small slab that runs a real distribution, with a magnetic spine along the back so you can clip on whatever the job needs. Mecha Systems has preorders open, and LinuxGizmos covered the current configuration on September 12. It ships January 2027.

What Makes the Magnetic Expansion Interface Different?
Plenty of pocket Linux machines exist. What distinguishes this one is that the expansion is a first-class part of the design rather than a header you solder onto. A 40-pin magnetic interface runs across the back, and Mecha lists three snap-on extensions: an RGB-backlit QMK-compatible keyboard with a trackpad, a dual D-pad gamepad with programmable buttons, and a GPIO and serial console extension that includes CAN bus.
That last one is the tell. CAN bus and a serial console are not gaming features — they are what you bring to a vehicle harness, an industrial controller or a robotics bench. The same device becomes a terminal, a field diagnostic tool or a tiny game console depending on what is attached, and swapping takes seconds rather than a screwdriver.
The M.2 B-key slot extends the idea internally. Beyond NVMe storage, Mecha says the slot accepts LTE, LoRa and FPGA modules, so a Comet destined for remote work can carry its own radio instead of tethering to a phone.
The Software Side
The Comet runs Mechanix, a distribution built on Linux 6.12, Fedora 43 and U-Boot 2025.04. Basing it on a mainstream distribution rather than a bespoke vendor image is the right call for a device like this — package availability and kernel updates are the two places small Linux handhelds usually fall down a year after launch.
Rounding out the hardware: Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4, an 8MP IMX219 camera with autofocus, two USB-C 3.0 ports plus one USB-C 2.0, a 3.5mm jack, and a 73 x 155 x 14 mm body at 225 grams.
Is the i.MX95 Worth the Extra $50?
For most buyers, probably yes. The step from the i.MX8M Plus to the i.MX95 buys two extra CPU cores, a roughly 2x faster GPU, LPDDR5 instead of LPDDR4, and an 8 TOPS eIQ Neutron NPU against the older part's 2.3 TOPS accelerator. If you plan to run any on-device vision or audio inference, that NPU gap is the deciding factor. If the Comet is going to be a terminal and a diagnostics head, the cheaper build is plenty.
The honest caveat is the calendar. January 2027 is a long preorder window, and specifications can move before hardware ships.
