The M5Stack ToughC5 is a new ESP32-C5 controller built for places where a bare dev board would not last: greenhouses, sheds, workshops and equipment cabinets. It pairs dual-band Wi-Fi 6 and an 802.15.4 radio with a 2-inch touchscreen inside a sealed, UV-resistant housing, and it sells for $49.90. CNX Software covered the launch on October 10, 2026, and M5Stack's documentation lists the full specification.

  • Processor: ESP32-C5HR8, a 32-bit RISC-V core at up to 240 MHz.
  • Wireless: 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi 6, BLE 5, plus 802.15.4 for Zigbee and Thread.
  • Display: 2.0-inch IPS, 320 x 240, up to 853 nits, capacitive touch.
  • Price: $49.90 on the M5Stack store.

What Is the M5Stack ToughC5?

The ToughC5, SKU K162, is the successor to the M5Stack TOUGH from 2021. The original used the classic ESP32. The new model moves to the ESP32-C5, which is Espressif's chip for dual-band Wi-Fi 6, and that change is the reason to care: a 5 GHz connection is useful on busy networks, and the 802.15.4 radio opens the door to Zigbee and Thread devices.

According to M5Stack's documentation, the board carries 16MB of flash and 8MB of PSRAM, with a microSD slot for logging. A real-time clock with a CR2032 backup cell keeps time through power cuts, and a passive buzzer handles alerts.

If you are weighing this chip against its siblings, our guide to choosing an ESP32 variant explains where the C5 fits.

How Weather-Resistant Is the ToughC5?

This is the detail to read carefully. The housing is PC and ABS plastic with UV-aging resistance, and M5Stack describes it as having standard water and dust resistance that is not designed for immersion. There is no published IP rating. CNX Software notes the same.

In practice that means rain, splashes and dust rather than submersion. For a sensor hub on a wall or a controller inside a pump house, that is the right class of protection, and the 853-nit screen is bright enough to read outdoors.

Ports, Power and Dimensions

The ToughC5 is designed to be wired into real installations.

  • Expansion: four internal HY2.0-4P ports covering RS485, I2C, GPIO and UART.
  • Cable entry: two M12 routing holes in the body.
  • Power options: 5V over USB-C, 6 to 24V DC through the RS485 interface, or a 3.7V battery.
  • Consumption: 320 mA at full load and 10.41 microamps in shutdown, both at 4.2V.
  • Size and weight: 75.9 x 58.0 x 42.5 mm and 119 g.

The wide DC input matters because RS485 sensors and field equipment commonly run from 12V or 24V supplies, so the controller can share the same power rail. The very low shutdown current makes battery-backed, wake-on-schedule designs realistic.

What Software Does It Support?

Arduino is supported today through the M5Unified and M5GFX libraries, and M5Stack publishes a PlatformIO configuration. UiFlow2, the company's block-based environment, is still in development for this model according to CNX Software, so plan on Arduino for now.

The board joins a growing family, including the M5Stack Stamp-C5 module for builders who want the same chip without the enclosure.

For anyone who has taped a dev board into a plastic food container and hoped for the best, a ready-made, mountable Wi-Fi 6 controller under $50 is a welcome option. More launches like this are in our mini computer coverage.
