Final Fantasy VII Revelation Closes the Remake Trilogy at Summer Game Fest
Square Enix revealed Final Fantasy VII Revelation at Summer Game Fest 2026 — the trilogy finale adds Cid and Vincent, airship exploration, and a new FIT system.
The Highwind Is Back, and So Is the Whole Gang
Okay — Square Enix saved the absolute haymaker for last. As Summer Game Fest 2026 wound down on June 5, the showcase closed with the official reveal of Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and final chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. Cue every FF7 fan in my group chat simultaneously losing it. After Remake and Rebirth, this is the one we've been bracing for, and the trailer did not come to play.
Cid and Vincent Finally Join the Party
The big roster news: Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine are confirmed playable. If you grew up with the 1997 original, you know exactly why that lands — Vincent's brooding gunslinger energy and Cid's tea-spitting pilot bravado round out the party in a way fans have been requesting since Rebirth ended. Their arrival signals that Revelation is taking the story into its darkest, most cosmic stretch, with Sephiroth inching ever closer to godhood and Meteor looming over the planet.
Airship Freedom and a New FIT Combat System
Here's where I got genuinely giddy. The trailer showed the party traveling aboard the airship Highwind, and Square Enix says you'll be able to freely explore the world from the airship, descending into different regions and revisiting fan-favorite locations including Wutai. After two games of more curated traversal, true open-world airship freedom feels like the payoff the trilogy has been building toward.
Combat is evolving too, via a new armor-based "FIT" system that introduces additional build options inspired by the job systems of older Final Fantasy titles. The series' action-meets-strategy battle flow stays intact, but with deeper customization layered on top — exactly the kind of mechanical glow-up you want for a finale.
Release Window and Platforms
Final Fantasy VII Revelation is targeting a Spring 2027 launch, and in a very welcome move, Square Enix confirmed a simultaneous release across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. No more waiting out timed exclusivity windows — everyone gets to board the Highwind on day one. For a trilogy capper of this scale, day-and-date parity across platforms is a genuinely big deal.
Why This Was the Showcase's Crown Jewel
Summer Game Fest 2026 was stacked with reveals, but closing on the FF7 Remake finale was a statement. This trilogy has been one of the most ambitious reimaginings in JRPG history, and Revelation looks poised to stick the landing — playable Vincent and Cid, an explorable airship, a fresh combat layer, and a worldwide launch. Spring 2027 cannot come fast enough. Save me a seat on the Highwind.
