Final Fantasy Resonance: What to Know About the HD-2D RPG
Final Fantasy Resonance is out now as the series' first HD-2D RPG, priced from $49.99 with 26 Vision companions and a free first-chapter demo.
Pixel art fans, this one is for you. Final Fantasy Resonance launched on October 22, 2026, and it is the first time Square Enix has brought its gorgeous HD-2D visual style, the look behind Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy, to its flagship series. Xbox Wire's launch post confirms the game is available now, with a free demo covering the full first chapter, and Square Enix lists it for Switch 2, Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC.
- Release: October 22, 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store
- Price: Standard $49.99, Digital Deluxe $59.99 and a $209.99 Collector's Edition with an artbook, soundtrack and a Final Fantasy Trading Card Game promo card
- Demo: the full first chapter is free to try, and progress carries over when you buy
- Visions: 26 legacy-hero companions to collect, from the Warrior of Light to Lightning, according to the PlayStation Blog
What Is Final Fantasy Resonance?
Resonance adapts the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the free-to-play mobile RPG that ran from 2015 to 2025. But this is no lazy port. Xbox Wire explains that Square Enix and developer LANCARSE rebuilt the combat, progression systems and world from scratch into a single-purchase, single-player console RPG.
The story stars childhood friends Rain and Lasswell, knights of the Kingdom of Grandshelt, whose peaceful life shatters when an armored stranger destroys the sacred Earth Crystal. Joined by Fina, a spellcaster with a mysterious past, they set out to stop a villainous group called the Sworn Six from wrecking the world's remaining elemental Crystals. Chocobos, espers, moogles and airships all make the trip, so it really does feel like a warm hug from the 16-bit era.
How Does HD-2D Change Final Fantasy?
HD-2D blends expressive 2D pixel-art sprites with 3D environments, dynamic lighting, particle effects and a tilt-shift depth of field that makes every town look like a hand-crafted diorama. Xbox Wire's reviewer calls Resonance possibly the best the style has ever looked, which is high praise after nearly a decade of HD-2D games. If you loved the look of The Adventures of Elliot, this is the same art direction applied to the series that started it all for so many of us.
What Are Visions in Final Fantasy Resonance?
Visions are the game's showstopper, and the nostalgia meter goes all the way up here. The PlayStation Blog's hands-on explains that crystal shrines throughout the world each tell a short tale of a hero from an earlier Final Fantasy. Complete it and that hero becomes an assist companion you can equip to a party member. Each Vision adds magic and attacks in battle and permanently boosts base stats like health and speed.
- Roster: 26 Visions in total, ranging from Cloud and Zidane to Terra, Lightning, Sephiroth and the original Warrior of Light, plus Brave Exvius originals
- Progression: Visions earn mastery points from battles, unlocking extra bonuses; Noctis, for example, starts with a 20% attack boost and Thunder or Blizzard spells
- Faithful flair: each legacy hero brings animations and music from their home game
Should You Start With the Demo?
Absolutely. Since the free demo covers the entire first chapter and your save carries over, there is zero risk in trying it first. Xbox players also get Xbox Play Anywhere, so one purchase covers both console and PC. Square Enix's portfolio has been on a roll this year, from Final Fantasy XIV landing on Switch 2 to this charming throwback. Catch up on more launches in our gaming news.
