One Developer, One Million Words, One Masterpiece

Every once in a while, a game comes along that reminds us why indie development matters. Esoteric Ebb, an isometric narrative RPG built by a single person — Swedish developer Christoffer Bodegard — has launched to the kind of critical reception most studios dream about.

PC Gamer awarded it 90 out of 100, calling it "the best Disco since Disco." CGMagazine gave it a 9.5. RPGFan landed at 9.3. The consensus is unanimous: Esoteric Ebb is the real deal, and it might just be 2026's best RPG, full stop.

A Tea Shop Explosion and a Failed Priest

Set in the fantasy city of Norvik, players take on the role of a failed priest investigating a tea shop explosion. Your companion? A goblin named Snell who has opinions about everything. The game uses a modified 5th Edition D&D ruleset for its skill checks and combat, but wraps it in the kind of deeply reactive narrative design that made Disco Elysium a genre-defining experience.

With over a million words of hand-written dialogue and branching story paths, Esoteric Ebb offers an astonishing amount of content. Every choice ripples outward, every stat check feels meaningful, and the writing walks a tightrope between dark humor, genuine pathos, and worldbuilding that rewards every curious click.

The Little RPG That Could

What makes this story even more remarkable is the scope of one person's achievement. Bodegard wrote, designed, and coded the entire game. In an industry where narrative RPGs typically require teams of dozens, Esoteric Ebb proves that vision, dedication, and a whole lot of coffee can still produce something extraordinary.

The game is available now on Steam.
