What Claude Code Mods Can Change, and What to Check First
Claude Code mods are TypeScript functions that rewrite prompts, add UI and replace built-in features. Here is how they install and what to check first.
Anthropic introduced mods for Claude Code on October 1, 2026. A Claude Code mod is a small TypeScript function that changes how the coding agent behaves, and it is the first time developers can reach into Claude Code's own interface and prompt flow without forking anything. If you already spend your day in the terminal with an AI agent, this is a new way to tune it to your own habits.
- What a mod is: a small TypeScript function that can rewrite a prompt, add new UI, replace a built-in feature or add entirely new functionality.
- How to get one: install mods packaged inside plugins, through the Claude directory or the /plugin command in the CLI.
- Where they run: the Claude Code command line and the desktop app.
- Safety note: mods run with the same machine access as Claude Code and are not sandboxed, so install them like any other software.
What Is a Claude Code Mod?
Until now, customizing Claude Code meant settings, slash commands and hooks. A mod goes a step further. According to Anthropic, a mod hooks into events inside the agent, so it can act before, after or in place of the thing that normally happens. That lets a mod do things like tidy up a prompt before it is sent, adjust how a tool call is handled, keep sensitive values out of tool output, or change what the interface draws on screen.
You do not have to write one by hand. Anthropic says you can ask Claude Code itself to write a mod, install it and reload it in the same session, which makes experimenting a short loop rather than a project. If you want the broader picture of how the agent has been evolving, our coverage of Claude Code auto mode shows how quickly its defaults are changing.
How Do You Install Claude Code Mods?
Mods ship inside plugins. You can browse and add them from the Claude directory, or run the /plugin command in the CLI. Developers can also package their own mods in a plugin and submit it to the directory so teammates or the wider community can use it. Anthropic's post says mods can target the terminal, the desktop app, or both, which means a single plugin can keep your workflow consistent across surfaces. The post does not name a minimum Claude Code version, so check your installed version if a mod does not appear.
Are Claude Code Mods Safe to Install?
This is the right question to ask, and Anthropic answers it plainly. Mods run with the same machine access as Claude Code, and they are not sandboxed. In practice that means a mod deserves the same scrutiny you would give any script you run locally: install from sources you trust and read what a mod does when you can.
For organizations, there is a built-in guardrail. On Team and Enterprise plans, a mod called sec-default loads first and is designed to prevent risky operations, such as overriding a permission denial. That gives administrators a baseline before any third-party mod gets a say.
Why Do Mods Matter for AI Coding Agents?
Agents are becoming the place where developers spend their time, and every team has slightly different needs. One group wants secrets redacted from output; another wants a custom status display; another wants prompts rewritten to follow house style. Mods turn those preferences into shareable code instead of feature requests. Companies rolling agents out to thousands of engineers, like the one in our Barclays Claude Code rollout story, are exactly the kind of teams that benefit from a standard, reviewable way to shape agent behavior.
