Barclays Claude Rollout: 16,000 Staff and Claude Code Next
Barclays is scaling Claude: 16,000+ staff use its AI assistant, and half its developers should use Claude Code by end of 2026. Here is the plan.
Barclays and Anthropic announced on October 1, 2026, that the bank is scaling Claude across its operations, from an internal knowledge assistant used by thousands of staff to Claude Code for its software engineers. It is one of the clearest pictures yet of what enterprise AI looks like inside a large, heavily regulated bank.
- More than 16,000 Barclays colleagues use the Claude-based Colleague Knowledge Assistant, which has handled over 1 million searches since going live in 2025.
- Claude helps process roughly 120,000 emails a day in Barclays' Global Markets business.
- Barclays expects 50% of its developers to use Claude Code by the end of 2026, expanding to a majority in 2027.
- Barclays serves more than 20 million UK retail customers.
All figures come from Anthropic's announcement, which counts as the primary source for both companies' own plans.
How Is Barclays Using Claude Today?
The flagship deployment is the Colleague Knowledge Assistant, an internal tool built on Claude with retrieval-augmented generation. It lets staff search policies, procedures and internal knowledge in plain language instead of digging through documents. Crossing a million searches suggests it has become a routine part of the working day rather than a pilot.
In Global Markets, Claude helps classify and route around 120,000 emails daily, getting client requests to the right desk faster. Anne Marie Darling, Group Co-Chief Operating Officer, said the value of technology lies in its impact on customers, clients and colleagues and the outcomes it enables.
What Will Claude Code Change for Barclays Engineers?
The next phase targets software engineering. Craig Bright, also a Group Co-Chief Operating Officer, said the bank is using Claude to help modernize legacy platforms and improve software quality, and that AI is reshaping both engineering and cybersecurity work. Getting half of a large bank's developers onto an agentic coding tool within months is an ambitious target. If you are new to the tool, our guide to Claude Code auto mode explains how it handles multi-step tasks.
Why Does a Bank Rollout Matter for Enterprise AI?
Banks move carefully, with strict rules on data handling, auditing and model risk. A deployment at this scale signals that the guardrails and review processes needed for regulated work are maturing. Paul Smith, Anthropic's Chief Commercial Officer, said few institutions hold AI to such a high standard.
For other enterprises, the Barclays pattern is useful: start with internal knowledge search, prove value on high-volume workflows like email routing, then expand into software development.
