Anyone who has tried to make sense of their own medical history knows the shape of the problem: lab results in one patient portal, prescriptions in another, a wearable's sleep data in a third app, and a paper summary from a visit two years ago in a drawer. On July 23, 2026, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health to all US users aged 18 and over, on web and iOS, across every plan tier. The pitch is straightforward — connect the sources, then let you ask questions about your own information in plain language.

What Does ChatGPT Health Actually Do?

Once you connect a source, ChatGPT can pull medications, lab results, recent visits, sleep data and activity logs into a conversation. The value is less about diagnosis and more about continuity: understanding what a marker means, noticing what has changed since last year, or walking into an appointment with a clear list of questions instead of a vague worry.

That framing shows up in how it was built. OpenAI says it collaborated with over 260 physicians to shape how the feature handles clarity and — importantly — escalation, meaning when the right answer is "this is a question for your doctor" rather than an explanation. For a consumer product touching health information, knowing when to stop is at least as valuable as knowing what to say.

How Is the Privacy Handled?

This is the part that deserves attention, and OpenAI has drawn the boundaries unusually explicitly. Health conversations, connected apps and uploaded files live in a sandboxed environment separate from the rest of ChatGPT. Health has its own memory store, so what you share there is not supposed to flow back into ordinary chats. Conversations are encrypted in transit and at rest, and OpenAI states they are not used to train its foundation models.

Architecturally that is the right instinct: a separate store, a separate memory, and an explicit training carve-out is a much stronger posture than a policy promise bolted onto a general assistant. Who Is This Useful For?

Realistically, people managing something ongoing. If you track a chronic condition, coordinate care for a parent, or simply have five years of bloodwork spread across three health systems, the consolidation alone is worth something. For a user with one annual physical and no connected wearable, there is much less to gather.

It is also a notable widening of ChatGPT's product surface. OpenAI has spent 2026 building purpose-shaped versions of the assistant rather than one undifferentiated chatbot — a pattern visible in the ChatGPT program for small businesses launched earlier this month. Health is the most privacy-sensitive of those, and it is the one where the sandboxing work matters most.

What to Keep in Mind

ChatGPT Health is an information tool, not a clinician. It is US-only and 18+ at launch, and it depends entirely on which providers support record connection — coverage will be uneven at first and should improve as more health systems come online.
