Xbox July Update Adds 15-Character Gamertags and More

Microsoft's July Xbox update ships 12 features to all Series X and S owners — longer Gamertags, poster-view library, and cloud play during updates.

Twelve Insider Features Graduate to Everyone at Once

System updates usually trickle. This one arrived as a batch. On July 17, 2026, Microsoft pushed a July system update to Xbox Series X and Series S that promotes a dozen features out of the Xbox Insider program and into general availability simultaneously. The rollout is automatic, and the headline change is one people have been asking about since the Xbox 360 era: Gamertags can finally be longer.

  • Unique Gamertags now allow 15 characters, up from 12 (non-unique and non-Latin tags remain at 12)
  • A new poster-view game library arrives, with a toggle for achievement badges
  • Cloud play now works while a game is downloading an update
  • Twelve features total ship at once, rolling out automatically to all Series X and S consoles

What Else Is in the Update?

The Gamertag change will get the attention, but the rest of the list is a genuinely useful pile of quality-of-life work. Console customization gains manual HEX color entry and theming that matches your gamerpic. The dashboard picks up an Xbox Network status widget, so you can tell at a glance whether the problem is you or the service. Profiles now show mutual friends. You can wishlist games before release, and a widget surfaces patch notes after a download completes.

There are two smaller items I especially like. Xbox 360 achievement art has been upgraded — a purely sentimental fix that costs Microsoft nothing and delights exactly the people who still care about a 2007 achievement list. And the Accessories app now shows controller-specific images, which sounds trivial until you have three controllers and no idea which one you are configuring.

Why Is Splitting the Accessibility Settings a Big Deal?

Because combined settings force a compromise. The update separates accessibility settings for Home from those for Games and apps, which means a player can configure the dashboard the way they need to navigate it without that choice propagating into every game they launch. Motion, contrast and navigation needs are genuinely different in a menu than in play, and letting the two diverge is the kind of change that costs engineering time and wins loyalty.

Cloud play during updates is the other quietly excellent one. The single most annoying moment in modern console ownership is sitting down to play and finding a 40GB patch between you and the game. Being able to stream it while the download runs turns dead time into play time.

A Good Stretch for Console Owners

Microsoft has not published an OS version number alongside this rollout, so if you are tracking builds you will want to check your console directly. But the shape of the release — a dozen small, requested, no-cost improvements shipped together — is the kind of maintenance work that makes a platform pleasant to live with.

It has been a good month generally, between this and the Nintendo side of things, from Mario Tennis Fever and the Super Mario Galaxy update to our roundup of the best Nintendo Switch 2 games of 2026. Plenty more in our gaming coverage.
