Triple-i Initiative 2026: The Biggest Indie Game Reveals You Can't Miss
Forty announcements in 45 minutes — the April 2026 Triple-i Initiative delivered, with a brand-new Don't Starve from Klei Entertainment and a major Risk of Rain 2 expansion leading the charge.
Indie Gaming's Best Showcase Just Got Better
If you missed the Triple-i Initiative on April 9, you need to catch up — because the April 2026 edition was one of the most genuinely exciting indie game showcases in recent memory. Forty announcements dropped in 45 minutes, packed with world premieres, surprise reveals, and updates on some of the most anticipated projects in the independent game pipeline.
The Triple-i Initiative has quietly become the indie industry's most curated showcase format: no filler, fast-moving, and consistently capable of real surprises. This year's April edition lived up to that reputation in style. Here are the highlights worth your immediate attention.
Klei Entertainment Drops Two Bombs
Klei stole the show not once but twice. First up: Don't Starve Elsewhere — the first original Don't Starve game since 2016, and yes, it's a proper sequel-tier entry in the series. Don't Starve Elsewhere introduces a multi-tiered wilderness with entirely new biomes, brings back co-op survival for groups, and adds a mysterious Fog mechanic that fundamentally changes how the world reveals itself as you explore. No release date yet, but the trailer alone has sent the Don't Starve community into orbit.
Klei's second announcement was Away Team, a space colony sim positioned as a follow-up to Oxygen Not Included. Away Team tasks survivors with navigating a reactive, unpredictable world — and in a genuinely surprising reveal, it includes multiplayer. A single-player playtest is available now for the curious.
Risk of Rain 2: Hallowed Concepts
Risk of Rain 2 is getting a new expansion. Hallowed Concepts sends survivors through haunting new regions of Petrichor V, adding new enemies, new item unlocks, and expanded environments to the game's already exceptional base. The original RoR2 loop remains one of the tightest in the roguelite genre — a well-designed expansion here is exactly the kind of news that brings lapsed players back.
Alabaster Dawn: CrossCode's Creators Return to Action RPGs
Radical Fish Games — the developers behind the acclaimed RPG CrossCode — revealed Alabaster Dawn with a May 7 Steam Early Access launch date. CrossCode set a high bar for indie action RPGs, and if Alabaster Dawn comes anywhere close to that quality level, it goes directly on every fan's wishlist. May 7 is right around the corner.
The Broader Showcase: 36 More Announcements
Beyond the headliners, the show delivered 36 additional announcements ranging from compact genre experiments to larger projects with fall 2026 windows. Warhammer Survivors was confirmed for all consoles in 2026, bringing the Warhammer universe into the bullet-heaven roguelite space. The variety and production quality of the full showcase lineup was the real story: indie game development is producing finished, commercially viable games at a scale and quality level that continues to expand what the independent market can deliver.
The April 2026 Triple-i Initiative was the showcase that proved indie gaming is in its best era yet.
