A 21 Percent Pop and a Very Confident CEO

The Trade Desk had quite a day. Shares of the programmatic advertising platform surged approximately 21 percent on March 5 after reports surfaced that OpenAI held early discussions with the company about selling advertisements within ChatGPT.

And if that wasn't enough of a vote of confidence, CEO Jeff Green made a personal open-market stock purchase of roughly $148 million — the largest insider buy in The Trade Desk's history. When the person who knows the business best puts that kind of money on the table, the market tends to pay attention.

The OpenAI Connection

The partnership discussions, first reported by The Information, suggest that OpenAI is exploring an advertising revenue model for ChatGPT, which has grown to approximately 910 million users and surpassed $25 billion in annualized revenue. Rather than building a walled-garden ad platform from scratch, OpenAI reportedly considered using The Trade Desk's existing programmatic infrastructure.

For The Trade Desk, a partnership with OpenAI would represent an entirely new category of premium ad inventory — conversational AI. For OpenAI, it would offer a proven monetization path without diverting engineering resources away from model development.

What It Signals for the Market

The combination of these two catalysts — a potential tie-up with one of the most influential AI companies on the planet and a massive insider buy — tells a clear story about where the smart money sees The Trade Desk heading. Programmatic advertising is already a $600 billion global market, and the integration of AI assistants into the ad ecosystem could be the next major expansion vector.

It's early days for the OpenAI talks, and nothing is finalized. But the market liked what it heard, and Jeff Green apparently did too.
