Steam Frame CAD Files: What Valve's Free Release Unlocks
Valve has released Steam Frame CAD files and electrical specs for non-commercial use, and modders are already printing straps, stands and battery mounts.
Steam Frame CAD files are now free to download, and the modding scene has wasted no time. In a Steam Hardware news post on October 9, 2026, Valve said CAD files and electrical interface information for its VR headset are available for non-commercial use. Translation for the rest of us: if you own a 3D printer and have opinions about head straps, your moment has arrived.
- Released: CAD files and electrical interface details for Steam Frame, per Valve's October 9 post.
- Terms: free for non-commercial use, with commercial makers asked to contact Valve.
- Covered parts: light blocker, head strap, battery housing, facial interface, core module and controllers, according to PC Gamer.
- Also in the update: order windows for reservations and power efficiency gains of up to 12 percent.
What Did Valve Release for Steam Frame?
The files live in a public Valve repository of CAD and electrical references. PC Gamer reports that the release covers the main pieces a modder would want to build around, from the facial interface to the controllers. Exact dimensions mean accessories can fit on the first print instead of the fifth.
The electrical side is where it gets interesting. The documentation details the headset's front expansion port, which PC Gamer describes as offering a PCIe lane plus power and camera functionality. That is an invitation to build add-ons that plug in, not just clip on.
Valve has form here. PC Gamer notes the company has now published CAD files for Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Controller and Steam Frame. It is a very Valve way of saying: go on, make it weird.
What Are Modders Already Making?
Rock Paper Shotgun rounded up the early wave, and it is delightful.
- A back-mounted holder for a power bank.
- Wrist straps for the controllers.
- Extensions for the light blocker.
- A coupler that joins the controllers into a gamepad shape.
- A headset stand shaped like a melting skull.
Somewhere between practical comfort upgrades and a melting skull is the true spirit of PC gaming. Expect storefronts for 3D-printable files to fill up quickly.
One note on the rules: Valve's wording is non-commercial use. Hobbyists printing for themselves and sharing designs are the intended audience, while anyone planning to sell accessories should talk to Valve first.
What Else Is in the Steam Frame Update?
The same post covers reservations and software. If you missed the launch details, our rundown of the Steam Frame price and sign-ups has the background.
- Order windows: reservation holders can now see an estimate on the product page, either by December or in 2027.
- Purchase emails: once yours arrives, you have 72 hours to act on it.
- Efficiency: software updates since launch have improved power efficiency by up to 12 percent.
- Fixes and options: a streaming error fix, a sensitivity setting for the presence sensor, a dominant-eye accessibility option and a smoother spectator view.
PC Gamer also reports that an upgraded official head strap with interchangeable batteries and off-ear speakers is on the way. It follows software groundwork like the SteamVR quick access menu that arrived before the hardware.
Why Do Open CAD Files Matter?
Because they extend the life and comfort of expensive hardware. Faces and heads vary, and a community with accurate files can cover every edge case a manufacturer cannot. Open references also help repairers, accessibility modders and small accessory makers get things right.
It is a generous move that costs players nothing and makes the headset better over time. More hardware and release news is in our gaming coverage.
