RLUSD Custody at Standard Chartered: What Dubai Clients Get
Standard Chartered now offers institutional RLUSD custody on the XRP Ledger from its Dubai branch, with a planned LMAX collateral link, as of October 12.
RLUSD custody is now available at Standard Chartered. On October 12, 2026, the bank announced that it supports institutional custody of Ripple USD issued on the XRP Ledger, with eligible clients served through its branch in the Dubai International Financial Centre. The same announcement outlines a planned second step with trading venue operator LMAX Group. Here is what is live, what is planned, and why the structure matters.
- Live now: institutional custody of RLUSD on the XRP Ledger at Standard Chartered.
- Where: the bank's DIFC Branch in Dubai, regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority.
- Planned: RLUSD as eligible collateral for agreed LMAX Group products.
- Method: a collateral mirroring model, so tokens stay in custody.
What Did Standard Chartered Launch?
The live piece is custody. According to the bank's press release, eligible institutional clients can hold RLUSD, Ripple's US dollar stablecoin, with Standard Chartered through its DIFC Branch. The asset in question is the version of RLUSD issued on the XRP Ledger.
For institutions, where a stablecoin is held is as important as the stablecoin itself. A bank custodian that is already part of their operational and compliance setup lowers the practical barrier to using a digital dollar at all.
Waqar Chaudry, the bank's Global Head of Digital Assets for Securities Services, said in the release: "Institutional clients want to participate in digital asset markets without compromising on how their assets are safeguarded."
This extends work we have followed before, including the bank's move to offer institutional access to USDC.
How Would the LMAX Collateral Link Work?
The second part is a stated intention, not a live service. Standard Chartered, Ripple and LMAX Group say they intend to make RLUSD eligible collateral for agreed LMAX products across trading and collateral management.
The mechanism is called collateral mirroring. In plain terms:
- The client's RLUSD stays in custody at Standard Chartered.
- The value of that collateral is mirrored to LMAX Group.
- The client can trade against it without moving the underlying tokens to the venue.
The release lists the intended benefits as lower transfer-related operational risk, optimized counterparty exposure and better capital efficiency. Keeping assets with a custodian while still putting them to work is a familiar arrangement in traditional markets, and seeing it applied to a stablecoin is a sign of the infrastructure maturing.
The companies are explicit that this stage remains subject to final documentation, successful testing, applicable laws and regulations, internal approvals and jurisdictional readiness.
Why Does Bank Custody Matter for Stablecoins?
The data point here is structural rather than numerical; the release gives no volumes. What it shows is a global bank adding a second major dollar stablecoin to its custody offering and connecting it to an institutional trading venue.
CoinDesk adds useful context. Ripple provided LMAX with $150 million in financing in January 2026 to embed RLUSD in the group's infrastructure, and Standard Chartered said the previous week that it intends to offer institutional custody in Singapore for selected digital assets. The bank also completed its acquisition of Zodia Custody earlier in 2026.
For RLUSD, this continues a steady geographic build-out that included its launch in Japan with SBI VC Trade. Jack McDonald, Ripple's SVP of Stablecoins, said in the release that "RLUSD was built for exactly this kind of institutional use case."
What Should Readers Watch Next?
Three things will show how far this goes: confirmation that the LMAX collateral link has moved from intention to live service, any expansion of the custody offering beyond Dubai, and whether other venues adopt the same mirroring approach.
As always, this is a report on market infrastructure and not a recommendation to buy or hold any asset. More on institutional adoption is in our crypto coverage.
