Solana Alpenglow Mainnet Date: What 150ms Finality Changes

Solana's Alpenglow upgrade activates on mainnet October 21 at epoch 1064, cutting finality from about 12.8 seconds to a targeted 150 milliseconds.

Solana's biggest consensus overhaul has a launch date. According to the Solana Foundation's upgrade page, the Alpenglow feature gate activates on mainnet at epoch 1064, starting around 15:00 UTC on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Once Alpenglow takes over from TowerBFT, the network targets transaction finality of roughly 150 milliseconds, down from about 12.8 seconds today.

  • Activation: epoch 1064, about 15:00 UTC on October 21 (the Foundation advises tracking the epoch, not the clock)
  • Handoff: TowerBFT runs for the first 5,000 slots, then Alpenglow takes over at slot 459,653,000, roughly 18 minutes in
  • Finality: from about 12.8 seconds to a targeted ~150ms
  • Client: validators need a release built on Agave 4.3.0 (Agave, Jito-Solana or Harmonic Salsa)

What Is Alpenglow?

Alpenglow replaces the consensus engine at Solana's core. It arrives in two phases. Phase one, Votor, ships now in Agave 4.3 and changes how validators agree on blocks. Phase two, Rotor, will later replace Turbine, the system that spreads block data across the network, with a single relay layer. Rotor has no date yet.

Votor's rules are simple. If at least 80% of stake notarizes a block, it finalizes in a single round. If not, a second round with 60% thresholds handles notarization, finalization and skip certificates. The protocol is designed to tolerate 20% adversarial stake plus another 20% offline stake at the same time. Under the old TowerBFT, the "confirmed" level needed more than two-thirds of stake.

The upgrade has been well rehearsed. It went live on devnet on September 25, and Decrypt reports that the governing proposal, SIMD-0326, passed with 98.27% support from voting stake.

Why Does 150ms Finality Matter?

Finality is the moment a transaction can no longer be reversed. At around 12.8 seconds, apps on Solana have had to choose between waiting or accepting a small risk. At a targeted 150ms, finality becomes effectively instant to a human. Payments, exchange settlement, games and on-chain order books can treat a transaction as done almost as soon as it lands.

The Foundation calls 150ms an expectation, not a guarantee: it varies with stake distribution and is fastest when a block finalizes in one round. Finality is also separate from slot time, which Solana already cut from 400ms to 200ms in stages that finished in October (we covered an earlier step to 250ms slots).

Why Will Solana's TPS Number Drop?

This one will confuse dashboards, so it is worth explaining. Under Alpenglow, validator vote transactions leave blocks entirely and move into certificates in each block's footer. Votes have always made up a large share of Solana's reported transactions. Headline TPS figures will therefore drop sharply on October 21 even though real user activity is unchanged. Analysts and explorers will need to re-baseline their charts.

Developers have a short checklist: streams must handle a bank_id field because a slot can briefly have more than one bank, and the "confirmed" and "finalized" commitment levels converge. The Foundation advises switching to "finalized" only after activation.

What Validators Need to Know

Validators also take on the Validator Admission Ticket from SIMD-0357. It is a flat 0.8 SOL per epoch, taken from the vote account and burned. The first charge comes at the start of epoch 1064, covering epoch 1065. Firedancer and Frankendancer are not supported during the migration window, so operators on those clients should follow the Foundation's guidance.

Alpenglow was first previewed in May alongside record Solana ETF inflows, and October 21 is when it becomes real. Follow the rollout in our crypto coverage.
