Five million copies. Four months. One extremely industrious Ditto. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company confirmed on August 13 that Pokémon Pokopia has crossed five million units sold worldwide, and the attach rate is the number that should make every publisher sit up.

  • Global sales surpassed 5 million units across physical and digital, as of August 13, 2026
  • Launched March 5, 2026 — roughly four months to the milestone
  • Attached to over 20% of the entire Nintendo Switch 2 install base, per analyst Daniel Ahmad
  • Now the second best-selling Switch 2 game, behind Mario Kart World

Why Is a 20% Attach Rate Such a Big Deal?

Because it means roughly one in five people who own a Switch 2 bought this specific game. That is system-seller territory, and it is rarefied air for a spin-off. Pokopia now sits behind only Mario Kart World on the platform and ahead of Donkey Kong Bananza — which, if you had floated that ordering at launch, would have gotten you some very skeptical looks.

It is also already the fourth best-selling Pokémon spin-off in the franchise's history, with analysts expecting it to keep climbing. Not bad for a game whose central premise is that you are a Ditto with a talent for interior decorating.

What Is Driving Pokopia's Momentum?

The cozy game boom is real, and Pokopia landed in the middle of it with the strongest possible brand behind it. The pitch — a relaxing life sim built on crafting and building, where you restore a desolate land using transformation abilities — is Animal Crossing's emotional register wearing a Pokémon costume, and that turns out to be a wildly effective combination.

Critics were on board early. We covered how it became the highest-rated Pokémon game on Metacritic at 89, and that reception clearly translated into legs rather than a front-loaded launch spike. Games that sell five million in four months on a young install base are being recommended, not just marketed.

What This Says About the Switch 2's First Year

The healthy signal here is variety. A kart racer, a cozy life sim, and a 3D platformer occupying the top three slots suggests a platform whose audience is not concentrated in a single genre — which is exactly what you want to see in year one. It gives smaller studios a credible reason to target the hardware.

For anyone still deciding what to play on the console, Pokopia has earned its spot on our Switch 2 recommendations. And if you missed the original pitch, our launch coverage explains the multiplayer hooks that have kept players building together. More in our gaming section.
