Perplexity Unveils 'Personal Computer' — A Mac Mini That Runs an Always-On AI Agent With Full Local Access

Your Mac Mini, Now With an AI Brain

Perplexity dropped two major announcements at its inaugural Ask 2026 conference in San Francisco on March 12, and both center on the same thesis: AI agents should have access to your actual tools and data, not just answer questions in a chat window. The headline product is Personal Computer — software that runs on a dedicated Mac mini, giving Perplexity's AI agent continuous access to local files, applications, and sessions.

The setup is intentionally simple. Users install Personal Computer on a Mac mini (or any Mac), and the software merges the device's local capabilities with Perplexity's cloud-based Computer system. The AI agent can browse the web, manage files, interact with applications, and execute multi-step workflows — all running 24/7 on hardware the user physically controls. Perplexity Max subscribers get priority access through a waitlist.

Enterprise Computer Goes Production-Ready

The second announcement is arguably more significant for Perplexity's business: Computer for Enterprise is now generally available with full enterprise security controls. The platform adds SOC 2 Type II compliance, SAML single sign-on, audit logs, and isolated sandboxing for each query — the table-stakes requirements that enterprise buyers demand before deploying AI tools at scale.

What makes Enterprise Computer compelling is its native integrations. It connects directly to Snowflake, Salesforce, HubSpot, and hundreds of other enterprise platforms, allowing teams to query data warehouses, pull CRM context, and build financial models without waiting on an analytics team. Teams can also interact with Computer directly inside Slack via direct message or shared channels — meeting workers where they already are.

Security-First by Design

Perplexity is explicitly positioning its agent architecture as more secure than alternatives. All actions require user confirmation, and every operation generates an audit trail. The company emphasized that its sandboxed execution model prevents the kind of cross-agent contamination risks that have plagued other agentic AI platforms. For enterprises evaluating AI agent deployments, the combination of compliance certifications, audit logging, and user-confirmed actions addresses the primary objections that security teams typically raise.

The Personal Computer launch also signals a broader industry shift: AI companies are moving beyond browser-based interfaces toward persistent, device-level integration. If your AI agent can access your actual computer — files, apps, and all — the range of tasks it can automate expands dramatically.
